I use an old Dell desktop for my print/file/torrent server: P4 1Gb RAM 160 GB HDD However the mass majority of my data storage is in my day to day/gaming/media computer which happens to be in my sig. It's more of a server than my actual server because the internet at my college is pretty restrictive about what goes on on there network.
my file server also doubles as an HTPC. specs include: ASUS AT3IONT-I Atom 330 @ 1.6ghz HT off. geforce 9400m chenbro es34069 2x 1TB seagate barracudas in RAID1 1x 1TB samsung F3 1X 150GB WD (system drive) Windows server 2008 R2 eventually i will have to ditch that case as i plan on adding at least 3 more HDDs. currently resides in the living room. the mobo is passively cooled, but the case has 2 80mm fans for cooling the hard drives that are annoying. version mk2 will have larger, slower 120mm fans for cooling the HDDs and motherboard.
No pictures as I don't currently have a camera, but I have a ReadyNAS Duo with a 1.5TB Sammy drive. Only 100GB full, as it only serves duties as music storage for the hi-fi right now. However, will either salvage a drive from my old PC or buy a new drive for Time Machine backups.
I use one of these bad boys! HP Proliant microserver with 4 2TB disks. This thing is a bloody bargain at £230 with £100 cash back so its only £130 for a min itx PC with 4 hot swappable bays and two PCIe slots. I have seen people online put a low profile GPU in it and use it as a HTPC.
Where did you get yours from D_R_B? Did you just put the company name as your own name on the cashback form? How long did the cheque take to come through? I have been looking at these the past few days, it seems more sensible than spending £100 on a case to get the same sort of thing but less good looking. It would then also free up my current mini-itx rig as a complete machine to sell.
I bought it from Ebuyer and like you said just put my name and address in the company section. The cheque arrived while I was on holiday but I think it was about 3-4 weeks in total. If your not fitting an optical drive you can squeeze another HDD in the top bay and use the spare SATA connection.
That's a mighty impressive deal. I installed one of that server's much bigger and more expensive brothers last year and was seriously impressed with the build quality and features... One of those for £140 after cashback is almost too tempting to pass up. I am seeing a new NAS backup system for my netowrk project... What's the maximum drive capacity of that storage controller? Will it accept 3TB disks?
The specs say it will take 8TB (4x2TB), one would assume that means 2TB per port, but one of the user reviews mentions 3tb and 1.5tb drives mixed. Also a lot of people seem to be using 4x2TB + a smaller drive in the 5.25" bay, so it must be able to take more than 8TB I am 99% set on getting on, it just seems too good to pass up.
What model are your 4x1TB 2.5" disks? Nice setup! Any redundancy on that? i.e. what storage configuration are you running the 19TB in? That is seriously AWESOME. I want a 1x 5.25" to 4x2.5" adapter for one of my machines! 4TB of storage in one optical bay. Oh the possibilites... This thread is putting ideas in my head
Nope but i'll have your N key as mine as all worn I run 2 Linksys Media servers both fitted with 2 x 1TB Samsung F3's. I will get to use them properly one day but they are just for backing stuff up as and when I remember.
First post so hello everyone Here's mine ..... an old Dell that I rescued from being binned at work because it kept crashing . Five minutes with a hoover and all was good . Media server for my htpc with a 2tb & a 500gb so far , room for 4 drives in total . 2tb external for backup .
Oh gotcha. Someone read my mind on the Q11! It's my Q11 based office rig that I was talking about putting a 4x 2.5 caddy in The DVD RW drive in it is never used anyway...
