Interesting. Think of the tourist numbers, with the reawakening of that identity via independence.

Never had a deep fried mars bar, I think it's one of those things that I could die happy not knowing about.

Oh they already adopt the identity. It's rare to meet a white American who doesn't claim to be Scottish.

A Black Pudding supper is far superior to any deep fried mars bar.

Or at least on one side of the family. The other is usually Irish or Italian.

No, they're American, and have been for a century or two normally. I don't claim to be half Norwegian simply because my family were kicking about in the kingdom of the isles when the Norwegians owned it.

Yes, but the number of first or second/third generation Scottish immigrants is still pretty substantial.

It's only been 7-8 generations since my paternal ancestor came over from Scotland, I think that makes me at least half Scottish. :p

@Sloth, Washington - DC or State? I passed through DC a number of years back, met some students who were about as Irish as you are Scottish.

They told me to get my ass out of their country (Ireland)....:jawdrop:......

State. Not too surprising, really. The east coast is a dark and scary place full of rude people with strange accents.

While the west coast is full of druggies, gangsters, surfer morons, hippies, and hipsters in ascending order as you go up the coast :p

Ahh, sounds like home! At least everyone but the gangsters are friendly. Unless you like mainstream music. :worried:

You actually have people surfing the north sea?

Meh, if their own country has nothing to be proud of :D

I wouldn't even know where my ancestors seven generations back came from...

Yup, lots of decent places to surf around the north east of Scotland. A few of my mates even surf off Aberdeen beach quite regularly.
