Gigabyte motherboard teases that their next Haswell ready motherboard will features 1080p UEFI screen mode. Source: http://www.techspot.com/news/52471-...e-high-res-uefi-for-haswell-motherboards.html
Can I watch youtube vids from within the bios? How bout a windows bios where you dunt actually boot into windows... just bios. "where do you want to go today?" - my favourite porn sites via winbios.
Because a pretty setup screen matters. Of all the things I've never wanted. Well played Gigabyte - if you can't innovate... pretend to innovate.
Spreadie you don't understand. With Haswell, voltage controller is embedded in the CPU. So now, a 60$ motherboard will allow you to overclock just as well, as a 250$ motherboard. So, now, motherboard manufacture have nothing to difference themselves, beside looks. So they need to find creative ways to separate themselves. Also, high resolution in BIOS is pretty big feat. It sure isn't easy, especially if it supports all GPU's.
While this is pretty, and I am secretly more than a little bit impressed with what they've achieved on a technically level I'm really with Spreadie on this one. It's not exactly a game changer!
i think its a interesting implementation, i like the live system info round the edges, and apparently you can customize it a bit to.
That's quite an assumption to make. I haven't read up on Haswell but, when you say voltage controller, are you talking the whole kit and kaboodle or just CPU vcore? Because there's an awful lot more to overclocking than just bumping the vcore and piling on the GHz, as you know. Regardless, if a 1080p EFI is enough to distance themselves from the opposition, we're all facing a pretty depressing time; and I pray for the resurgence of AMD.
Anything related to the CPU voltage, the System Bus is already integrated if I am not mistaken. So yes, I guess you have memory and that is all... until the next generation CPU, most likely. Soon motherboard on a chip. Where the chipset is included in the CPU (not that you have a choice for chipset, but it means you'll only be able to OC with the heatsink of the CPU)
I must admit, 1080p UEFI whoop whoop, how often does anyone go into the bios these days and for the amount of time I spend in it I really couldn't care if it was in HD or not. Anyone esle thinking GIMMICK?
Agreed, but I only go into BIOS to reset setting if something isn't right Am assuming hardcore overclockers spend a while in BIOS Personally I'll miss the old fashioned BIOS look
Impressive... maybe... Strictly necessary... maybe not... As long as it's sensibly laid out i'm not all that arsed if it's 1080p or not... don't care how shiny it is if it's a complete ball ache to use... Didn't ASUS try something along those lines with that 'Express Gate' on some of their motherboards... that said it was complete crap and it was the first thing i tuned off on any boards that had it...
I'm thinking not a hugely important detail, but still a natural progression. Not worth any fan fare just a nice to have.
Thats the thing, technically it's probably very clever but lets face it, it's the bios, you have a tinker and really don't care about if it's HD or not. I was impressed that UEFI was a GUI and had mouse accessibilty, anything more than that really isn't necesary
Thats pretty cool. If they can make the mouse response nice and crisp then id be stoked with that, the UEFI stuff always seems to have a bit of mouse lag which kind of sucks.
I thinks it is a good idea and looks pretty nice but I don't see the point in it. With Haswell it's looking like this is going to be the sort of thing that will cause people to buy different brands/models of motherboards. I saw something on the net, that basically said the things that are going to be different between boards are the stuff like sound, network and looks and that is about it because they are all going to overclock etc the same. I will just be waiting for Haswell E to be honest.
I think the majority opinion here is that it's all very pretty but what can it do that a normal bios can't? When I first read about UEFI.... some years ago... I was led to believe it would allow bios updates via the internet directly into the bios. I was led to believe you could access the bios from within windows and not have to reboot. Well... neither of those things have happened. So what else can it do but look pretty? I've got Asus UEFI... I prefer it to the old style text bios but I set it to advanced mode so I can access more controls. The cutesy graphics of the simple mode don't give me full access. Only advantage I can see is mouse control and even then I have to lower the DPI of my mouse because it's too sensitive in the bios. So what can I do on my UEFI that I can't do on old style bios? Nothing.
Moar pixels = better 'puter. Simples. In all seriousness once they can integrate all UEFI functionality into the OS with on-the-fly tuning I'll be a happy chap.
