For the htpc I built I bought a laptop slot load bluray drive for it.

It is a TS-TB23L. I think made by Samsung or something.

I haven't used it much, but yesterday I was copying some of my blurays to my pc and the first one worked fine and then it wouldnt read any discs after that. After a bunch of looking for seemingly non existent driver updates and uninstalling and reinstalling it in device manager it still would not work.

Finally I gave up and rebooted the pc to see what that would do and put in a disc and it read it. Awesome, I thought, until this morning I put in a different disc and it does it again. I reboot multiple times trying multiple discs and no go.

Is it possible that a dirty lens would be causing this? Or some other kind of issue? Or maybe I just got a crappy drive?

    thanks

probably got dust in it.. get a blu-ray lens cleaner disc.. I have one.. it works.. if it doesn't read.. then you got a dead drive..

Looks like you were right. I had it in the workshop too much when building the htpc case. :wallbash:

I opened it up and cleaned it out and now it works perfect it seems. Put in multiple discs a number of times and reads them all. Ripping a bluray as I type this.

actually I ran into issues again last night. I am not sure why it does this but I know how to 'fix' it.

What happens is it will read any disc and work great, but after a disc has been in there for a while (when im ripping it to mkv) I eject it once done and then it wont read another disc. to 'fix' the problem I power down the htpc completely and power it back on and it then reads discs perfectly again.

I think it was a bit dirty, but that isn't the issue anymore. is it possible that it is going to sleep or into some power save thing?? it will spin up the disc a bit for a few seconds and the light flashes a bit, then goes off.

Seems more like software than hardware, IMO.

Can you roll back the driver to a previous version?

Can't. I looked at what driver it is using and its just using a generic microsoft cd rom driver.

Anywhere I can get a newer driver?

Tried that Microsoft Fix It thing. Didn't work.
The driver listed on that site is what I currently am using. :(

How can there not be a newer driver?

nope, I've ripped over 40 blu rays to my server so far. I have to do a full shutdown and power on after each one though. But it works.

2 of my blu rays didn't work though... :( but I think thats the disc not the drive. Too bad I bought them quite a while ago, I don't think I could get replacement discs could i?
