Please tell me a nice 'elasticated' for future dev / streetwise-proof 'combo' AMD processor and mobo (AM3 socket and 990FX chipset) great for watercooling and overclocking and also USB3 support. Because I am not a techie please tell me if HDMI support should be included or the video card (if included separately in the system) HDMI is sufficient.
Ok so we need more information first! Budget? What will you be doing with the system? What monitor do you have and what resolution is it?
Please let me narrow it down to the processor only. Which AMD processors are good for overclocking? This question is not for the Intel inclined users. Have you overclocked and watercooled AMD processors or heard / read about, please tell me which ones have shown the best performance?
black editions are good for overclocking you can watercool any of them bulldozer is round the corner. Yours sincerely An Intel Inclined User
Google : AMD am3 overclocking ... reading ... reading ... Oh an AM3 overclocking guide on the 3rd result : http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?260836-AMD-AM3-Overclocking-Guides For the mobo ... Asus Sabertooth 990FX or Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7. CPU : Phenom II X6 black edition or incoming bulldozer. Just get a BE (Black edition) if you want to overclock
Now now Pete, the last few threads were about cases for watercooling, this is about the hardware to be watercooled Hey!! It just hit me, if we'd had this thread made first, we may have understood the other threads more and subsequently been more helpful. Oh, and for hardware get an AMD X6 1100T and The Sabertooth suggested above These offer the best performance out of the AMD lineup.
Should work fine with bulldozer. Pretty much anything that's AM3+ with the 990FX chipset should be compatible with BD.
The technical construct is not the issue. Does MSI have good support and record for their mobo? Are they a serious manufacturer?
I have an MSI board, and would personally recommend them over Gigabyte. ASUS or MSI would be my personal choices. And yeah they're serious and build really good boards.
Please tell me of any AMD 990FX mobos (Bulldozer processor compatible) that don't have Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) / Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). Asus Sabertooth 990FX and MSI 990FXA-GD80 both have it http://tinyurl.com/TheTechReport108 . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface#Criticisms_and_risks
You want a board that doesn't have UEFI? So you want a board which won't and will never use 3TB hard drives? Where you have to manoeuvre using the arrow keys. You're crazy to think standard BIOS offers anything over UEFI.
It offers plenty. UEFI can't be flashed by end users. God help you if you have a bug. BIOS is still the way to go, in my opinion. If it can't be serviced by me I don't need it.
You'd rather stick with an antiquated system rather than have a new system with a couple of flaws that could probably be ironed out at a later date? You're all mad
That "flaw that could be ironed out at a later date" would involve if IB needs a UEFI update, you mail your board back. That so minor now? BTW, Intel has announced that was the case for IB.
I'd rather have to mail my board back to get a UEFI update than being stuck with a BIOS designed a million years ago. Stuck to a 2.0TB hard drive limit and flicking through BIOS options with my keyboard. But to each his own, I guess
