News Open Compute unveils AMD Open 3.0, Intel photonics

Who else thinks AMD's new platform seems rather dull in comparison to Intel's silicon photonics?

The idea of instituting a new motherboard standard that aims to meet everyone's interests to replace the old standard they critique for attempting to do just that, sounds ill-advised. And the design hardly seems suitable to HPC use when it only provides 1.5 PCI slots.

The photonics on the other hand, are really exciting. A super-high-speed interconnect like that could be quite valuable to the super-computing industry, where communication between processing nodes is always one of the biggest bottlenecks on performance.

 

I kinda hate to say it, but you sound like the guy coming down on a 5-year-old for being a bad artist when the kid's playing with his crayons next to Salvadore Dali.

Let's see, Intel is, give or take, at least a full generation ahead of AMD and is currently sitting on several billion dollars. Meanwhile, AMD spent 5 years reinventing NetBurst, and Rory Reed is currently contemplating offering $5 handies in the porn theater down the street to keep the company afloat.

 

And your point is? Its not like Intel is to blame for AMD's lack of progress. And yes, for Silicon Photonics.
