Currently I am running and I7 920 6GB of TRI channel ram and 2 80GB WD blue HDD in Raid 0 on a EVGA E760 3way Classified board with 3-260GTX in SLI and a 9600 for Physx. The rest of the rig is in my SIG. I notice when I'm gaming on WOW (don't start bashing on it) in 25 man Raids my FPS take a serious hit down in to the 20-30 FPS range, and the game starts lagging. My ping is fine down in the 40-50 MS range so that's not the issue. So I am trying to figure out what will benefit me more a SSD or upgrade ram from 6GB to 18GB or 24GB or buy a new video card and drop the SLI? P.S. Computer during gaming is using over 3GB of ram. Comments/Suggestions please.
More ram will do nothing for you in 32bit games. SSD would be most beneficial overall, but won't help your FPS either. How about a more recent GPU? One good current GPU instead would be a much better way to go.
Wouldn't the CPU be a bottleneck in 25-man raids? If not then I'd say a GPU upgrade. RAM wouldn't help. SSD would be great, but wouldn't improve FPS in multi-man WoW raids.
The 9600 I have not tried to OC the other three are OCed from the factory I could probably push them a little further but not sure how much.
I was talking about the cpu not the graphics card Rip out the 9600 Get an SSD Overclock the CPU. Do you have an aftermarket heatsink or the stock one?
Ill try it out and see what it does when i get home and ill let you know how it works out. Off to find the OC thread on the 920 again.
wow only uses 2 threads at max anyway - 1 for sound unless you `hacked` to re-enabled hardware sound ; get a faster ard - i use an X6 1090T (3.6ghz) with 8 gig ram , and with the 64bit client the game is using 1 gig , and i actually have nearly 2 gig doing nothing. so more ram wont do squat. SSD? faster zoning - even with the 1st gen ssd i have i have to wait usually for the server to catch up - but it doesnt help with fps. what settings in game you use? - i would honestly look at a new video card , use 1 of the gtx 260`s for physx and get something like a gtx 560ti
Yep, overclocking the CPU will make the difference in a game like WoW, none of the upgrades you suggest will help - unless WoW doesn't support SLI (can't really remember) in which case it could benefit slightly from a newer graphic card than your 260.
I have to agree with the people saying drop your physx card and overclock your cpu based on personal experience in wow. On a side note im not sure why your game is lagging if you are not dropping below 20-25 fps.
I see activity on all 4 cores in wow while playing at least that's what the CPU Meter shows when I get home tonight ill pull the 9600 work on the OC and monitor the CPU/Thread usage and post the results. Thanks for the advice guys. I appreciate it.
Don't get more ram, thats just trowing away monney, a ssd will help you a little, you could check how fast your hdd's are atm, my old drive had a read speed of 35mb/s that holds you back alot! Considering the GPU upgrades every one said, yes you could do that! Even a gtx550 will max out WoW. What fps are you aiming for? is a minimum of 30 good enough or do you want a constant of 60+ fps?
