Hey guys, Feel free to bitch at me if this isn't an appropriate area for this post, but it seemed the best to me... Anyway, I am looking to block a certain internet site (www.edline.com and www.edline.net ) because I am looking to have a good time this weekend, but that plan will be cut short if my parents see my 57% in Physics. I'm not sure if I totally understood a post in a different forum, but to me it sounded like I could add the websites in question to the hosts file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) with an ip of 127.0.0.1 and it would display a "This page cannot be displayed'' error, which is exactly what I am looking for. Please correct my understanding of this file if I am wrong though. Either way, if by the hosts file or another method you have, if anyone could please help me with this that would be great. (And a rather covert method like the hosts file is also a plus ) Thanks guys, -Brad
Alright, to get you started: open up the "hosts" file in a text editor (any will do really), then enter the following line to the very bottom of the document: 127.0.0.1 edline.com 127.0.0.1 edline.net Works like a charm
Alright, i dunno if its just my comp or what, but i went to the file edited it so those two lines were at the very bottom, restarted, and both of the sites still show up fine. This is what the file looks like Code: # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 local host 127.0.0.1 edline.com 127.0.0.1 edline.net Thanks again for the help. -Brad
Hmm dishonest? no. If they ask me if I edited the host file so that I could not be ground for the weekend, I will tell them that yes I did. However I dont think that will happen, so there is no need to be dishonest. Besides, its mearly a delay of punishment, not all together getting rid of.
its not dishones ive done this before but with another site i got a B- in the end but parents never knew i ever had a D
Mindin shedding some light on how I could get this to work, seeing as you know where I'm coming from? EDIT: Seems to me i fixed it, i just needed to put www. in front of each address. Thanks for all the help guys! -Brad
