    Best single core, without overclocking?

    AMD FX57, or 4000+.

144 and 146 are both good - though the 146 is a bit better thanks to its 10x multiplier (basic optimum for Athlon 64 based overclocking).

If you can get a good stepping Opteron then you could probably coax 2.8GHz out of it - be careful though, since the new ones aren't anywhere near as good.

Otherwise, a Venice 3200+ should still go to 2.6-2.7 with luck, meaning that you can get a 30-35% overclock. Not bad for such a cheap chip :)

I just built a new rig for a mate who was on a small budget, used a CAB2E 146 Oppy, which aren't supposed to be the best, but I still got 2.8GHz out of it without a sweat, they're good cheap processors :)

My 3200+ Venice was a bargain, been running a great overclock for 10 months or so now. :D
