hey guys, can you help me

i have to use a hardwire to get my internet started...its really annoying since the router is in my parent's room

but, i used to have wireless set up but the it crashed

and now when i try to connect to the router...it takes ages to find the singal, and disconnects me every 5 mins!!!

the USB interenet stick is a netgear 54mbps wireless usb 2.0

and the router is also netgear and so was the adapter

any tips on how to prolong the disconnection or strengthen the signal?

Re-write you post in a less childish manner, "woteva that means" and "what do I doooooo??" isn't going to get you very many replies, use a spell checker too! ;)

54Mbps is the speed of the connection, allowing 54,000,000 bits per second to be transferred, but of course that reduces as signal quality reduces. USB 2.0 is the speed of the adaptor set at 480Mbps, but the adaptor is limited by the network speed of 54Mbps.

Anyway, are there any other devices that may be interfering such as a cordless phone (not mobile phone) and microwaves which run close to the 2.4GHz frequency of wi-fi.

But also try a hard reset of the router and try different channels, use WEP encryption (seems to work better with this than without) and reinstall the drivers for your usb adaptor. Have you tried the adaptor in another computer? Or another adaptor altogether?

Willingness to learn doesn't mean you have to write in poor English (ok, it's not as bad as some other people on this forum, but no reason why you can't use proper English).

    Excuse me! I'm bored :)

Hope you sort your problem out though.

EDIT: I see you've changed your post, that's an improvement! :thumb:

sorry for my poor grammar...but i didn't think people would be so fussy about grammar, especially apostrophes and capital letters

also i thought routers was spelt like that

but i saw somewhere on the site reuters...so i assumed i was wrong...naturally...lol

I think that's your problem, it is one of the most common cause of wireless disconnections. You have three choices, move the phone to another part of the house, get rid of it and use a corded phone or use ethernet to your computer.

A hard reset is done by pressing a small button on the casing of the router, usually underneath or on the back and you'll probably need a pin to do it. Remember that you will lose ALL settings on the router.

You can change the wireless channel to "clean up" interference, default is channel 11 so changing it may make a difference. You can change the channel in the router somewhere and you will need to change it on your adaptor too but most modern adaptors scan for networks on all channels anyway.

I think the last line of the quote is pretty obvious.

ahh...thank you for clearing all that up for me

it has actually helped a lot

sorry that you have/had to explain everything to me in layman's terms its just that i'm not as advanced as everyone else...im practically new to this computer world (not stupid...just not as advanced)

    RE: ozstriker

O right. Sorry for double-posting guys. Thanks for telling me before i get in real trouble.

Could you actually tell me what you mean by double posting. Is it replying to another post or what?

And i don't know where i have double posted. I may have double posted, bt can you just tell me where, so i can learn.

I have to say, I'm beginning to get scared by the strictness of this forum...... :worried:

    EDIT:

Don't worry i understand now, i'm currently checking all my posts and apologizing for any double posts

Sorry for being pedantic, but isn't it bits per second, not bytes?

Ragzy, you can use the edit button, it will stop you having to double post. Double posting is often frowned upon on forums, and I've noticed you have done it a couple of times. :)

Yeah, wireless just seems to cause problems for me. I can rely upon the good old ethernet cable, but my parents get annoyed as they go to bed early and i have to switch the internet off early, which is unbelievably annoying... :waah:

Isn't there another phone socket in the house? Having only one in the house, located in the bedroom seems unsual to me.

Have you got a longer telephone or ethernet cable too?

You see, I just moved houses and the guy living here before never touched computers. And so there is only one phone socket UPSTAIRS (which is in my parents bedroom), which is where i use the computer.

It doesn't matter how the long the cable is, any cable running in their room after they're sleeping is out.
