can anybody give me some advice on X2 3800 steppings.

I'm looking at going phase and i've heard that some have problems with the memory controller not working at minus temperatures.

Stepping: CDBHE 0534, with the mem controller being RPBW

Anybody phase cooled one of these, any advice welcome

    Thanks.

I'd say as in down to -40 ? I had my 3800 X2 on a vapochil XE ( CCBWE 0525 XPMW 246) managed to hit 2.9ghz on 1.67v wasn't entirely stable but Pi but bench stable, does 2.88Ghz easy tho :) That was only getting temps of -25C evap ~-6C CPU +15C dualcore load. What kind of phase are you using ?

Should be ok to -40-> -50 if not colder :) Nothings 100% certain though, some BH chips still bug at warmer temps

Should be fine with stock mach1 temps :)

your stock M1 or Vapo will only reach -30C under load anyway. SOme x2 are coldbuged as low(rather as high) as -30 but that is a rare problem, you should be fine.

Evap temps maybe, actual CPU temps you're probably heading more towards postive figures IMHO. Should see around 0 -> -5 full load with a nicely overclocked X2 and decent vcore from a stock mach1

True, but i like to make people think they are getting something with comercialy built phase units costing 800+ USD that they cant get from a pelt block and an extra PSU. ( I prefer the custom built phase change units that can hold -60 with a 150W load.) But it is a cool solution and you will win some bragging rights.

ONce again with that system you should see NO cold bugs.

right, the phase noob needs a bit more help, i'm scrapping the X2 and i'm gonna clock a conroe 6600 to earn some 'true' bragging rights.

problem is, is it was a socket A head/mounting. now got a 939 mounting on it so the bloke tells me ( i have not recieved it yet) so what would it take?

could i make a bracket for it to fit LGA 775 or buy another head for £70?

Just make a barcket out of some 2mm SS an put the holes where they need to be. dont spend the money to buy a new head.

well i don't see why it should need a new head, a freezing cold bit of copper is a freezing cold bit of copper, it shouldn't make any difference.

Its only the mount kits that differ its a standard head. If you've got a 939 mount kit, best bet is to re-drill holes in in the base (the bit that mounts to the mobo) to get it to fit LGA.
Only issue you may have is clearance around the CPU socket - might need a little work to get a good seal round the CPU.

@ LVmike - thats the thing most people think.. If they get a phase unit, they're GOING to see hugely negative temps. In 99% of cases with commercial units you won't. Even a stock mach2 GT will struggle to keep negative temps with a high clocked high end CPU...

thanks for your help guys, i think what confuses most people is some quote the prommie temp, and while the mach may read -15C but the the CPU may actually be at 5C.

so basically if i get a good seal i will be ok, if the mounting don't seal quite right, surely a nice wall of seal string and plenty of dielectric grease will do? I'm pretty hand so i'm sure i could make something that will do, once i get the unit it will probably be more clear to me.

Best bet is to layer up neoprene and armaflex tape rather than use seal string where you can mate. Seal string tends to be REALLY sticky and extremely hard to remove. It does do the job quite nicely though.

Or for future ref. (to anyone who also wants to know) you can pick it up at any good hardware store that has insulation, and neoprene, that may mean however that you need to go to a hardware store that sells H/VAC equipment.
