they have been made over and over again, vu meters

for sound, hdd activity, network activity...

but i want one for cpu activity, and u guys will have to help me :D
some of you will refer to pointofnoreturn
that would be a no go because i don't have a par port that is free

so i want it to be serial or usb or so

just a led that blinks, just like the hdd led (that everyone changes to blue, yes that one)
would be nice too, than i can just connect it to a vu meter that i have

thank you very much and i hope you guys can help me

    cheers

It can be done. I guess that pointofnoreturn is the one I was thinking about that uses 8 leds on the parallel port, which would be the easiest way. Otherwise I think you are going to have to get into making something that runs of the serial port.

If you can't program and you can't work with electronics, then you can't do this.

    i can solder dude =)
just need some sort of circuit/software?

i'm not a total noob, already made some vu meters, rheobusses, baybusses, ...

obviously someone doesnt crunch SETI.. my cpu on all my machines is always 100% :p

ever see the CPU tachometer? similar to what your looking for..

    no good dude :p

    i need 10 leds :D

is it hard to develop soft for the serial port?

you could cut out the tach and hack a lm3914 to it somehow :) ofcourse the tach is most of the cost :)

true.. true.. i dont know how the software for the tach works, but the tach operates on pulses, at least on cars, one pulse per crank rotation..

for the leds i think you would need to vary the voltage.. sounds like i could get complex.. hrmm

tach=tachometer. That thing on your dash (some dashes anyway) that shows the speed of your engine (RPM's). In the case of the above link, it shows the activity of the cpu. Very cool device. One of the systems that competed in the case competition against Anemone (sp?) had one I noticed...went very well with the flame jobs he had going on the case.

The electronics are the easiest part. If anyone can do the coding to produce pulses at the serial port coresponding to the cpu load I can design a circuit.
