Since when did my multi-thousand dollar computer become relegated to an overpriced console.

This is a computer not a dumbed down console.

What, the huge logo shouting WINDOWS VISTA is not enough?

I guess they can do what they want, besides, with what they are charging for it, and how XP runs, I doubt many will actually buy it, and those who do, will certainly hack it. EULA or no EULA. I think MS has lost their minds.

Oh for those who do not think this will be a problem, try building computers for a living. After restarting a system 20 times loading drivers and software, you will be ready to kill whoever wrote that or forced you to listen to it. And for the record, who says the console startup sound is not annoying. I cannot stand it.

Think of it this way, 5 years down the road, when MS releases the next Windows (I am being generous with it being only 5), how many times will you have heard that sound? You cannot tell me you will not be tired of hearing it.

    Imagine this:
Late night, everyone but you in the house is sleeping.. including your wife just 5 feet away in bed.

    you boot your pc,
*windows plays anoying sound that cant be turned off*

yea.. I can imagine this is going to cause a few problems.

i rather enjoy the quick boooooong from my macs... lets me know it's working... same concept as a post beep... and it occurs at the same point in startup, and only during a cold boot

Vista doesn't take long to boot at all. Faster then an XP boot.

it is easy as pie to turn this off, just lower your speaker volume....... :p

i am sure they will change this with an update after lots of corporate hands start puting up nasty gestures.

*me imagines 1000 computers booting at the same time*

"HOLLY (nasty word that starts with a C and ends with a T and woman are realy ofended about it)!!!!!! turn that s*it off!!!"

"I CANT ITS AGAINST THE EULA!!!!! and it is a spiritual side of the branding experience"

Thanks orb & CollinstheClown, that was a quick answer.

To me the sound is just another delay at startup. I know it's a very tiny delay but it's the principle. For every program I use I turn off whatever splash screens & startup sounds I can.

wow BT viewers quite vocal on this one

I think, its stupid to HAVE to have the sound, like at the moment you can choose what sounds you want (if any) why the hell change it

The windows XP start up sound can be quite annoying, if your volume is high it blasts out, and it doesn't even indicate your PC is ready to use

Microsoft thinks you are an idiot and a marketing tool. And you want to buy software from them?

my copy of XP is very stable, infact my second computer has been on 24/7 for weeks now, and not crashed, or restarted once

Its usually software under windows that dies though

    if program = MS then
    don't crash

    ElseIf program = external then
    randomly crash

Sounds like the subroutine MS would use ;)

Definitely. As fast as, if not a little faster than, my XP boot, and starting from hibernation is even better. It's quite a quick OS considering what they've added to it, so they must be doing something right.

    @Paradigm Shifter

mute it before shutdown, and unmute after its loaded, does the drick for me.

Sure there must be a way to automate/script this process for all acounts.

Or only turn your speakers on when you need them?

Don't tell me all the stupid sounds will be permanently on? I've enjoyed blissful silence in Windows since 98, and I don't want that to end now.

No, just the startup sound before you logon. Everything else should remain customisable as previous versions of Windows.

Well at least MS can't tell If the speakers are on or not upon bootup of the PC :thumb: , Although hell I don't like having a sound on bootup that I can't kill. :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

this is just stupid, if someone does a cold boot once he knows how long it takes before you can login and with my computer i don't have the time to eat cereals before he is ready.
