top notch. as an aside, did you do any packaging classes during study, or was that implemented into a design subject or something?
Uber. I just love the mesh you used there! The cable holders and the PCI-holder and everything that I didn't mention, the amount of nice details is stunning.
Thanks once again for your comments. I havn't taken any classes (or learned anything) related to packaging at school. Although the packaging lab is in the same building as my design studios are. I have an architectural engineering midterm right now and then i'm off to watch the Tour of California. I'll have an update tonight though most likely. Stay tuned.
GS your a inspiration to us all. I would be stoked to have the aluminum chassis as my rig and you mearly see it as a great bracket. Have you seen any problems with the wood in terms of shrinkage, or has this been compensated for?
I truly appreciate that. Shrinkage from the wood has been minimal since i bought it very dry and have kept it at a relatively constant humidity. The square posts however, warped on me. It was fairly substantial too. The good thing is the joint design works so well that it brings the wood back into shape and it is essentially un-noticable.
I really like the shape of that mesh, and also all metal work you have done is fantastic. The way to lock the pci cards is also nice! Thumbs UP!
Thanks very much all for your comments. I'm on the home stretch now and i've been working like crazy to get this thing ready for powdercoat but first I want to show you where i was on friday. The Tour of California came through SLO and then they had a time trial in Solvang, so I went there with a friend. Here are some pictures: Micheal Rogers: Jens Voight: Big George Hincapi: I had to cut out the front panel design. Here it is in picture form: Test Piece: Viola: And now the real thing: Turned out very nice i'd say. Then I needed to do some bits and bobs. For one, i screwed up on the hole placement and the slot for the mobo wires cut off the screw holes so I made these little guys to compensate: And here is my dvd drive, a pioneer dvr-K05 The pieces so far: I've been patching all the holes that won't be needed since i'm not taking them apart again. This should make everything very nice: And another bit. These pieces will hold a dust filter in place that can easily slide out for cleaning: And last but not least, I cut out the character for "light" on the hdd panel. This will make sense later: That's all for now. Powder coaters on tuesday. Until then, Stay tuned and tell me what you think.
I used: 1, Jig saw for the 3/16 alu and my scroll saw for the .09 inch alu 2, J.B. Weld since i can powdercoat it too
This is not modding. Its art at its finest. You are a true artist and I hope I can do my project to your liking.
U seem to master both wood and metal very well this case is turning out amazing ,u must have been working on it for along time to concidering all the work on perfection, complicated design of case and that it is in fact a scratch buildt.
First of all let me say that everything about this project has blown me away from the beginning. The level of craftsmanship thats gone into this case is rarely seen. Secondly, that mesh cage you have built there has given me an idea for lighting. What sort of effect does diffused light have when shined through it ? Would it be possible to use blue and white CCFLs or LEDs on a fader circuit to produce a water/ripple effect inside the case ?
Thanks very much everyone. The case is officially off my hands and at the powder coaters except he is a couple weeks behind so I get to go in and work on it . Thank you very much. I actually don't know what the light looks like through the mesh since i tested the lighting before that was done. TBH, I don't know what a fader circuit is either Sounds like a very interesting idea though. I know a couple ccfls can fit on the top of the inside of the case so when it comes back, its time for some light experimentation.
By fader circuit I mean a small electronic circuit which fades the lights on and off. By overlapping the fades (fade one on whilst the other is still fading off) it should produce a nice shifting light effect. Just a thought =)
