Hay all, im in the proccess of buying some new bits for my comp. Im planing on running a q6600, pos clocked up a little, tho might run stock. And graphics wise prob just a 8500 gt or summin around that.

I want to know if im going to need a new psu, My current psu is a Model: JN120F-450-AP.

    Voltage:

    115V ~ - 230V ~ (it'll be the 230V since I'm in the UK)
    +3.3v = 30A (250W)
    +5v = 45A (250W)
    +12v = 22A (264W)
    Max overall = 423W

Or i might get a Q9300 on the 14th, wuold this make any diff ?

    Current:

    -5v = 0.5A, 5W
    -12v = 1A, 12W
    +5V = 2.5A, 12.5W

    Thanks for any help.

If I were you and you're looking for new bits, I'd get something better than the 8500... Depending on your budget and what you are likely to use the computer for, I'd at least got for an 8800 based card. The 8500 is a waste of money IMO.

I would also say that your PSU is a little weak for that system. Get a quality 500W jobbie. Who makes your current PSU?

    ^ QFT.

Need a little more info on what you intend to use the rig for tbh

If it's gaming, grab a Corsair HX520W and a 8800 series is you've got the cash to cover it.

As for the q6600/q9300... The q9300 is a 45nm chip whereas the q6600 is 65nm. In laymans terms, the q9300 will run cooler at stock and should overclock better. That said the q6600 is a notoriously good overclocker anyway.

Also, depending on the board, the q9300's 7.5x multiplier might cause you some grief. Have you considered a 45nm wolfdale? (Intel E8xxx series).

Again more info on what you intend to use it for will help people make suggestions.

EDIT: btw, what do you mean by "q6600, pos"? the q6600 is no "pos" lol. Maybe you meant oem?

hay thanks for your info. By pos i mean possibly sorry. Im leaning towards the 6600 tbh just as i dont really wanna spead to much cash. Then again, the 9300 might run quieter and its reviewed as abotu 7% better at rendering encoding and the like.

I'll be using the rig for mainly graphics work/ 3d work, and rendering. Might play the odd game, but i dont want to spend alot on a gaming card, as most likely i wont game really, and if i do i can take worse graphics lol. I want brute rendering, multi app force really.

The reason i went for the 8500, is i've only got a 6800gt at present lol, so i just thought for £50 might add something like a Gainward GeForce 8500 GT SilentFX 512MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI.

Im on the fence about 2gb/4gb ram. As i'll only be using 32bit os. so prob not any point going over 2. Im looking at Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB) or the 2gb set..

My current psu is a jeantech. pretty crappy i guess just bought it as my old one overheated. .. :(
I think the only reason i might got for the 9300 over the 6600 woudl be bit less noise with less heat. but if i jsut clock the 6600 to 3ghz it'll prob be fairly forcefull and save me £40

    With OcUK Value IP35 Pro Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
And cooler wise. Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler.

sticking with my case lian li v1000b, and keeping my existing hd's for now.

Cheers and hope thats all the info ya need.

what about this psu, Zalman ZM500-HP Heatpipe Cooled 500W Modular PSU. and do ya recon i could clock the 6600 to near 3 gig on 5400 ram. As wandering abotu getting some ocz 5400 4gb, instead of 2gb corsair 6400..huurmm

Q6600 will do 3Ghz on air no problems. I dunno about the OCUK own brand board. I'd be tempted to get a budget Gigabyte or Abit board (like the DS3R) or something for that money. As for ram, if you're using a 32-bit OS, just go with the fastest dual channel 2GB pair you can afford (at least PC6400 which can be had for as little as £25-£35).

As for the graphics card, surely some of your 3d apps would benefit from having a more powerful card?

I don't know a great deal about 3d rendering tbh and what rendering apps have 3d hardware support but I'd imagine those that do would benefit tremendously from a better vid card.

I see what your saying, but for rendering its purly cpu power unfortunatly. Maybe graphics cards would help out with in scene navigation. but the jump from abotu £60 for the 8600 to 120 for the 8800 seems bit much for what i'll be using the machine for. psu wise do ya recon that zalmans a good choice?

hurm cheers m8 i hadent even looked it up. i have a ASUS V9999GT/TD rev 1.01 256meg DDR3 kickin aruond i'll just use that instead of gettin a new graphics card. then save up and buy a 8800 in a few months or summin. other that that then here the rest of the spec im thinking
(do you know of any fanless cooler i could attache to that graphic card?)

    OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK)

Zalman's heatpipe psu's aren't bad. I would still rather get the hx 520, since it doesn't have the limitations of the fsp epsilon platform.

Ye the corsair looks good too, one of the main reasons for lookin at the zalman is the noise levels. i already have a 460 watt psu but its a cheap jeantech thing i picked up somewere. if im buying a new one i'd like a quiet one.

You might want to consider a PC Power & Cooling (PCP&C) 'Silencer'

I think he means possibly when he has said 'pos' whiskey.

As for psu's, always checkout seasonic and silverstone.

Keep an eye on Scan.co.uk's deals of the day section because these two often come up and you could save yourself a few bob :)

Yeah, he explained that one Goose. I was having a slow moment I think

IIRC Corsair PSUs are rebadged Seasonics anyways.

Have you heard a Corsair PSU? Go read some reviews, as one of the things that all reviewers make a point of is that they're incredibly quiet, even under load. Probably due to the fact that they have such efficient internal circuitry but my HX620W barely gets warm even with all the gear in my rig (see sig). I'm 99% sure it'll be the quietest fan in your system.

That looks like a decent setup.

As I said though, with a 32-bit OS, I'd still rather go for 2GB of fast ram in dual channel than 4GB of slower ram and only use 75% of it.

cheers for info. trying to figure out a diff mobo as the freezer 7 dosent seem to fit on it.. :(

im gonna stick with the 4gb as its only £ 18 more for the extra 2gb even if i only use a bit be fine.

o and changed to this psu. 520W Corsair HX Series Modular PSU, ATX, EPS12V, whisper quiet.
