Hi, I used to use winamp all the time but lately it just crashes in Vista. Might be because I have the 64bit version. Anyway, I am also trying to use winamp on my work pc which is xp 32bit and I find that it really slows down the PC. Does anyone know of a different mp3 player that is free to use and works well? aside from windows media player.
still winamp is king, shame it crashes. VLC is great at playing anything, but it dosen't have a playlist nor dose it have shoutcast radio, lol!
it might be a new feature but the vlc that I got today has a playlist. Doesn't have the shoutcast radio, but I like to listen to my own music anyway.
foobar2000 I used to use winamp on this pc (vista x64) and i had problems with it crashing every now and again. and im now using foobar, not had a problem since
Carrying the Computer King Seal of Approval™ (not to mention the cpemma Righteous Software Award©) AIMP2 Lean, mean, and magnificent! http://www.ghacks.net/2008/10/15/how-to-record-internet-radio-with-aimp2/
foobar2000 It even, as I found the other day, has global hotkeys, meaning you can control it from any application
Winamp 5.x works beautifully under Vista 64-bit Maybe because I disable all the crap. I just put Online Radio, playlist, bookmark, Local media, modern skin... and that's about it. No global hotkeys, no visualization, no CD ripping and all that stuff. Also I disable the allow Winamp to report anonymous statistic, and update. This make Winamp light, fast, and as it seam rock solid.
It usually works for a bit after I re-install it. but then it will crash and crash every time that I try to start the program. Maybe its a vista service that it doesn't like.
No it's not. I have Vista 64-bit Ultimate edition with SP1 installed after, and an other computer (laptop) with Vista 64-bit Business SP1 native, and I have no problem. It could be your sound card drivers that trows Winamp in bits and confusion, or one of the features that I don't install. Try this, - Check Device manager to make sure every component is correctly detected - Close ALL programs - uninstall winamp 5. - uninstall any search bars and crap on your system - download Winamp 5 Pro (http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp5541_pro_all.exe) (doesn't contain ads, bars or anything like that, just don't put a serial number if asked, IF you don't have the pro version already) - Install it with the basic feature (you can have the modern skin), don't install any alpha/beta feature in the customization section. So this means: + No Winamo Agent + No Sonic ripping.... + No Signal Processor + No Old-school WAV writer + No WaveOut/MME out + No Library/Core Media Lib Component/CD Burning + No Library/Core Media Lib Component/History + No Library/Core Media Lib Component/Now Playing + No Transcoding Tool + NoReplay gain + No Auto Tagger + No Playlist Generator + No Portable Media Player support + No visualization + No extra languages + No Winamp update + No Winamp Remote + No Winamp toolbar + No Winamp system tray control + No 50 free MP3... See if this works better, if not then something is wrong with your system, and you should ask on Winamp forum for technical support help.
Guys! I can't believe no one mentioned SongBird from Mozilla. Once I set up songbird with addons like "Lyrics" and "Shoutcast" and organized all my music I was in love. Oh yeah and it has the best black skin that matches Vista..... My opinion I guess. I left Winamp along time ago, could never figure out what the big deal was other than lite.
foobar2000 I've used Winamp, MediaMonkey, and WMP and so far I like foobar2000 the best. It takes some customization, of course, but it's light and powerful. Lotsa extra additions (components) available. I think, though, if I ever get tired of foobar, I'd either try AIMP2 or purchase a copy of MediaMonkey. If I had the extra cash I'd probably buy it anyway; the free version kinda sucks.
