Hi, i've got two x1950xtx's in crossfire and am looking at the HD4770. I want it for its lower power consumption and to move to DX10, but any idea what the performance difference is going to be. I can olny afford 1 card now but will hope to get another later in the year.
I'm actually inclined to think a 4770 would perform worse in certain scenarios, depending on how well those X1950XTX's scale. Performance should be similar overall.
Best way is to try and get some benchmarks, though that will be difficult. The XTXs are pretty powerful, so I would upgrade to something more powerful. Maybe a 4850 perhaps dual 4770s? Depends what your budget and intended use is. Btw, it was the X1950 XTX vs 7950 GX2 battle that first got me into PCs
that would be a very nice upgrade path if that is your budget. let me explain... the 2900xt was anywhere from 5% or so to 50%+ faster than the x1950xtx. the 3870 was slightly faster than the 2900xt, but vastly superior in thermal and power usage metrics. the 4850 was light years ahead of the 3870, anywhere from 50% to 95%+ faster. see where i am going? the 4850 was at most about 10% faster than the 4770, but many times less than that, and a few times the 4770 outperformed the 4850. so, yeah, a single 4770 will not only be faster than the 1950 xtx, but it may even be faster than 2 in crossfire, i bet that it would.
I went from an X1900 XTX 512MB to a 512Mb 4850 and the differeance was amazing... I can now play Crysis at good settings @ 1920x1200.
Cheers guys. Thats a big help. Gonna wait a few weeks to see if the prices go down, but i'm now decided on the HD 4770, (maybe 2 if I can hide the bank statements from the missus).
