Does anyone here know what a MERCHANDISING SPECIALIST really does. I am wondering if they interact with the customers and try to assist them in finding a product or if they work after/befor ethe store is open putting items on the shelves thanks
Thats just a generic term for "underpaid floor worker". Or "slave with a namebadge" or "floor jerk", I could go on... Any reason you ask? Just get the job and feel your title does not live up to its name?

I've been working at bestbuy for 3 weeks, and not liking it one bit... too much structure to it and I just find it's not effective when your manager has a manager that has their own manager who has their own general manager... Plus I wasn't giving proper formal training, and after 6 shifts I had an evaluation where I was given a 1.67, failing is a 1.5, and I just don't understand how they calculated that in such a short period of time... Don't think I'll be there too long, but maybe it's just the way the computer section is ran... It's not what you know, but what you can sell which is what I'm hating...
sounds like future shop too. I had an interview there and the manager told me that he will hire whoever can sell more. It doesn't matter who knows more, as long as you can talk someone into buying something.
Quoting a fellow employee "It's nice to know what your talking about and help a customer with a question, it's better to sell them stuff that may fix the problem though" I just can't be dishonest like that towards others... I like to be honest and helpful, and a few customers even said I knew a lot considering my "in training" tag, but I can't "dick" the customers around and try to make them feel they need something they dont... i find it REALLY stupid and innapropriate... even worse are the inflated prices for their "geek squad" services... bah
when i worked at canadian tire, 'merchadising' referred to setting up new product displays, allocating shelf space, and keeping signage up to date. keeping shelves stocked was the floor staff's job, the merchandisers just did the initial setup to make sure everything was pretty and in line with corporate standards. edit: ah, johns google-fu knows more than me. looks like it's just stockboy.
When it works. Google seems to be having server/email/ query problems. Chat is questionable. Queries are time of day dependent. and the build-your-own-custom-queries little bots have entered their hibernation phase. john
Lol.. i've been there for 4-5 weeks, and I'm ready to quit... Only thing I buy there is a) Cd's b) DVD's and c) Video games, though normally they are out of stock of new releases... I also realized they sell fail rocketfish psu's for a hefty amount... a crap no name psu (700 watt) advertised as "the ultimate stability in gaming power supplies" for something like 189.99... I just laughed really hard... Even better was the fellow staff, one had a power surge and thought his pc was broken, i asked him about his psu and he said it was a reliable no name el'cheepo... i told him spend the money for a decent one and he goes hell no, it's a waste... I lol'd hard at that...
Meh. You understand that from their point of view they don't give **** about how much you know compared to how much you can sell. We as consumers don't have brand loyalty anymore, so just because you at BestBuy knew to tell me that I need X, Y and Z doesn't mean I'm not gonna screw you by writing it down and buying it from Amazon later for half the price. They do know that if you go to Best Buy for computer bits you're almost certainly way out of your depth, so you get what you deserve for not knowing what the salesman's talking about. Two examples that are common; women in garages are the first - I had to step in at a KwikFit recently, hearing a woman with a Renault Clio (FWD hatch) being sold two new rear tires because her 6-month-old ones were 'worn down' from 'excessive acceleration'. The other is computer gear; the amount of totally extraneous crap my parents have been sold over the years...
The problem with knowing much about computers and selling them in a retail environment is that the technical aspects can be overwhelming for a person who would go buy a computer there in the first place. With sales the most important thing to remember - KISS (Keep It Simple Salespeople)
Yea... when I told someone a pc had a quad core they were like isn't that bad cuz it will get hot and do bad things... I'm more technical so I have a bit of trouble simplifying everything and trying to sell it and make the presentation as pretty and simple as possible... Don't plan to be there much longer
So bestbuy fails! My brothers laptop is covered by their so called performance service plan which covers lit pixels by manufactures defect rate, for HP it is 7 pixels, my brother has a ton of lit pixels, and they claim its physical dmg. We've had BB send it twice to be checked and both times they said its from pressure on the screen... the laptop is never in a bag, its either sitting at my brothers desk, or sitting in the kitchen... no pressure at all... Bestbuy is refusing to fix it and want us to pay for a new screen... It is complete BS, and I'll be happy to tell you all that I will be quiting very soon just because I can not stand the way things are ran, its all competition and numbers, they are ranked daily with other stores world-wide and compete to do the best in the country... they don't care how many customers they screw over... Here's a site my brother found expressing our feelings, from past customers and past employees. http://ihatebestbuy.com/testimonials.html
