Hey guys, finally joined the forum. I've been folding for a while but thought I'd finally see if I had everything set up correctly. My machine folds most of the day except when for gaming or intensive tasks and I switch it off when I go to bed. My system specs are: I7-920 CO stepping Asus P6T Mobo 3GB of Ram 1GB ATI Radeon 4870 620Watt PSU I currently run 2 VM Notfred clients and a Window SMP client. Any suggestions? Thanks
Welcome to the forum robddav. You'll get a few more thousand points per day running a GPU client on your 4870, so that's definitely worth setting up too.
I used to run the gpu client before I got the VM's up and running. I got fed up with it loosing work units when I switched my monitor on after getting home from work. It also got a little too toasty. Will it be ok to run alongside the 2 VMs and SMP client?
Hard to say as I don't run the VM client on my Core i7 - however, it should run if you're not currently at 100% CPU utilisation.
I run 2 vmwares and the gpu client together and they both run fine set both vmware-vmx.exe to low priority I set 1st one to core 0 and 1 then the vmware to core 2 and 3 and the gpu client for nvidia is set as folding@home-Win32-gpu.exe to run realtime on all cores and Fahcore_14.exe to realtime all cores gives me all together around 10k a day oh and mine aint a I7 thats on a q6700 so if I can run it you should be able 2 also the gfx card is a 9800gt
Welcome to the folding team officially bud I wouldn't run 2 x VM's and a Windows SMP client though! I would just run the 2 x VM's and a GPU2 client, from experience an i7 with Hyper Threading on you can just start 2 VM's off and set them to low priority and just start the GPU2 client. What speed is your i7 running at and what PPD are you getting at the mo?
fahmon currently says 4569.35PPD. CPU is @ 2.8GHz. Think the P6T has done a slight o/c by default. 21x 133.9Mhz. CPU temp is about 65 degrees. Any suggestions regarding the GPU loosing units when i switch the monitor back on?
Disable screen saver and all power management of the monitor. Reintroduce till you find the guilty party. If that fails then don't turn the monitor off.
I'm struggling with the gpu client. It seems to work for an a period of time and then freezes. Once in this state all I can do is reboot and hope they all restart without errors Any ideas? I've updated to Catalyst 9.9, switched off the VPU Recover and left my monitor switched on (no screensaver, power save options on) and it still happens.
It's getting annoying now. I left my pc folding at work but came home to find it had froze at 11 something. The graphics driver had reset so my screen was that horrible colour and some crazy small resolution. It didn't respond to keyboard or mouse so I had to reboot. I got all 3 clients running again before I went for a run and came back to find it had froze about 6 mins after i had left. What am I doing wrong with the gpu client? Any ideas?
Just a crazy idea, maybe, but as I have been looking into power requirements for my new PC thought I'd mention the possibility of the PSU. Looking here http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2008/11/03/intel-core-i7-920-945-965-review/12 And here http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2008/11/18/gainward-radeon-hd-4870-1gb-golden-sample/11 It works out at around 500ish watts for just the G card and CPU at 100% load. Assuming a good PSU has on average around 85% efficency that sounds like a 620w PSU may be struggling. Especially if you add up all the extra items which will be consuming power. Not necessarily the cause, but looking at the ever trusted bit tech reviews it seems a possibility. Thoughts?
Extreme PSU calculator reckons 520 Watts. My PSU is a Corsair HX620. Case is Coolermaster HAF932 with the standard 4 fans. Perhaps I should try 1 VM with the GPU Client and see if that's stable?
I dont think efficiency work like that if your psu is 620w it should produce 620watts if its 85% efficient it will use 730watts from the wall to produce those 620 watts. Mike
It's usually either temps, bad OC's or power when things start crashing. To make sure the gfx cards are fine run the crysis benchmark on 200 loops
Ahhhh I see, well thats a misunderstanding on my part! However, it's worth a try? Do you not agree? If I try to run my extra 9600gt on my 650w Xclio PSU direct from the hardwired PCI-e cables I get a similar experience with regard the 'drivers' etc. I do also get a message telling me it isn't recieving enough power though. Xclio PSU sucks I know! It folds with 1 though so that will suffice.. for now.
Hey Keith are you Running 2 PCs with a Q6600 in each? Looking at your Folding page it shows GTX260 9600GT Q6600 SMP1 Q6600 SMP2 Q6600 SMP3 Q6600 SMP4 If so then i need to get my VMwares running as this WinSMP SUCKS!!
