Looks like consoles gaming could get pretty interesting in a couple of years.

Either they know something Intel and AMD don't, or this is going to be a £20,000 monster filling several large cabinets.

Seeing as the Xbox runs at 800mhz do we really need the equivilent of 100 P4 2.5ghz CPUs anyway?

Another interesting point is that the article mentions the immense processing power will offer benefits such as "downloading games from the Internet" and "recording tv shows".
How does CPU power help at all with that? We already have more than enough for those purposes.

In conclusion, its just hype designed to make people reserve the first batches at insane prices. Sound familiar?

Isnt "Spec" hype rubbish and its all thanks to Microsoft and the bloody Xbox.

But on another note the actual "Cell" chip is very interesting.

Come on, we all know what'll happen. The new console will be far superior for around 1 1/2 years until affordable PCs catch up and take over again, then another new flock of consoles is released.

    Its not completely untrue...

3ghz+ pentium 4's Hyper-threading is just like this. Hypertheading gives only 2 processor cores on one chip whereas the IBM cell chip will have about 16 at a higher clock rate.

However, the article does say that they haven't even got a cell prototype yet...

It was mentioned that the PS3 would use cell computing a loooong time ago.
if they havent even got a prototype yet, a 2005 release is looking unlikely.

Sony was good about that too. I remember something about them being able to render the Final Fantasy movie in real time, Networking four together would overpower any supercomputer, Middle eastern nations would be using them for ballistic solutions and just having one in the same room with you would cure every known ailment.

Well, the same happens with every console does it not? I seem to remember Ridge Racer being rather lame in terms of using the processor to good effect when compared with say, Gran Turismo :)

For a long time to come PC's will regin because of the ability to 'mod' games such as different skins, maps etc. Which is at the moment impossible to do on any console.

PCs are more versatile, i mean can you really play ultima online on an xbox,
theres only so far a controller can go

I will always worship the PC and not the console

Yes but you can only get new content made by the developers not joe public.

Do you really think Valve would have made Counter Strike for HalfLife?? ;)

No one knows that this is solid. Wolfenstein (orginal) wasn't modable, many games aren't. It all depends on the coder
