Back in the days there seemed to be more fanboys that would buy from Intel or AMD but not from both. Nowadays, it seems that power users like us buy the best bang for buck, regardless which manufacturer it's from. I'm curious to see if it's all in my head or not Here's what I owned over the last 13 years Intel : Pentium 166 Pentium 233MMX Pentium II 450 Pentium 3 800 Pentium 4E 2.8 Pentium M 740 1.73 Core Duo T2500 (laptop) Core i7 950 AMD : Duron 800 Duron 1.3 Athlon XP 1800+ Athlon XP 2400+ Phenom 9500 2.2 Phenom II X3 720 Phenom II X4 965 If I exclude the laptop's CPU, I have had the same number of AMD and Intel CPUs. To be honest, I am quite surprised as I always preferred Intel. The first 2 AMDs I bought, I bought them because they were cheap. I never did that with Intel. I bought because it was the best (okay okay, the Prescott was crap even when new, but it was still a huge upgrade back then) What's your story ?
Here's the processors that I/my brothers have owned since 1996. Cyrix 486 100MHz AMD: AMD Athlon 1GHz Intel: Pentium 4 2.4GHz Pentium 4 2.8GHz E6600 2.4GHz E8600 3.33GHz QX6800 2.93GHz Q9550 2.83GHz I7 920 2.66GHz Laptop is an Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66GHz). I've always stuck with an Intel processor. Bought a friend a pre-built computer more than 5 years ago which was using an AMD Sempron processor and found it to be a little bit sluggish, even though it was clocked at 2.3GHz. With an Intel, I found my system to be a lot more responsive, and all the tasks seemed to be completed quicker. My personal favourite has to be Intel - you get what you pay for!!
I've got a much shorter history than you guys. P3-800 AXP 1400+ AXP 3200+ Athlon s754 something or other, probably the 3000 (for a couple of months until the s939 DFI boards came out) Opty 144 Opty 146 Athlon X2 3800+ Core 2 Duo 5300 (for a day) Core 2 Duo E8400 (to replace the crappy 5300)
Intel: 486 dx2 p100 p133 overdrive p200 p2 350 e6700 q9450 AMD: K6-2 400 athlon 750 athlon 900 athlon 1400 (the hot one) athlon 2200 athlon 3400
Intel P1/3/4 Pentium D's ..various Celerons ...various 2x original Xeons E2160 i7 940 AMD X2 240 X2 245 X2 7250 X4 620 There's probably a few that I've forgotten about. Plus what ever's been in the 3 laptops that I've owned.
Interesting. You stayed with AMD for about 10 years before going back to Intel. Why exactly ? (I ask this but I know the answer. The E6X00 series was great)
These are the CPU's that I can remember having, from a variety of PC's (including my gaming rig, my HTPC and my daughter's rig) Intel: Core i7 920 (gaming rig) Core 2 Quad Q9550 (gaming rig) Core 2 Duo E8400 (gaming rig then daughter's rig) Core 2 E2200 (daughter's rig) Pentium II & III & IV (Can't remember exact details, had a few of each) (all gaming) i386DX (gaming) AMD Athlon X2 4400+ (gaming rig) Opteron 146 (gaming and then HTPC) Sempron 2200 & 2400 (skt A)(gaming rig) Athlon XP-M 2500 (this and below were gaming) Athlon XP 2400 Athlon 1000 Duron 750 (iirc)
The only Intel I've ever owned is the Celeron in my Eee 900. Which is weird, I dont really consider myself aligned to either camp but the data doesn't lie. AMD: Athlon 900 Some Skt A Athlon 1.6GHz (admittedly in a system that I didn't build.) Athlon X2 4400+ Athlon X2 6000+ Phenom II X4 955
Intel. P1 P2 ~400mhz P3 ~700mhz P4 2.8, 3.06, 3.2 Celron 2.8 3ghz Core 2 mobile 1.66ghz Core i7. 2.66ghz Core 2 duo 2.66ghz P4 Mobile Pentium M AMD Duron Athlon. I think mines slightly biased
Pentium 4 1.5 Ghz Socket 478 Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz Prescott with HT, Socket 478 Pentium D 805, 2.66 Ghz, LGA775 Celeron 430, LGA775 i7 920, LGA1136 Some Celeron dual core in my laptop. Never had an AMD.
286's 386's 486's P1's P2's P3's (both sockets/slots) including celly's P4's (S478 & S775) including celly's Dual Core's including a celly (still got it as well) C2D's (which I still use) Like the above, never had AMD's, simply because every time I buy CPU's it is the Intel's that have the biggest bang for buck. Maybe it is a timing thing...
AMD Am486 DX4-100 100Mhz Intel Pentium MMX 133 Mhz Intel Pentium III 600Mhz Intel Pentium 4 1Ghz AMD Athlon 64 X2 2800+ AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ AMD Phenom X4 9850 BE that's it
Intel 486DX33 (Laptop) Pentium 166 (Laptop) Pentium 200 Pentium IV 2.53 Pentium ? 2.2 Mobile (Laptop) Q6600 E8400 Q9650 i7 920 Cyrix 90 166 AMD 1GHz (Laptop) Evergreen 400 (possibly a Cyrix) EDIT: The Evergreen was an AMD K6-2 400MHz CPU that could be used in a Socket 7 motherboard that was normally limited to 200MHz. It required a BIOS update which was supplied with the kit. I bought it in 2000 for around £150 and thought it was wonderful. It was apparently slower than a Celeron 400. http://www.xtremetek.com/reviews/index.php?id=15&page=1 I still have all of the CPUs except the P4 2.53 & AMD 1GHz
Cant remember the exact models, but up until the intel i series release, i was almost solely AMD, since the i series ive only got intel chips. Overall ive had more AMD chips though.
Intel: - Core 2 Duo E6600 - Core 2 Duo E8400 - Core 2 Quad Q9450 - Core i7 860 AMD: - Erm? Hopefully will build an AMD rig in 6 months/a years time.
Pentium 150 Pentium Pro 150 (faimly computer) Pentium II 233 Pentium III 733 Pentium III 800 (family computer) Pentium 4 2.4B Pentium 4 2.8C Pentium 4 551 Celeron 2.2 (family computer) Athon 1.6Ghz iirc (HTPC) Core 2 E4300 Celeron 356 (HTPC) Core 2 E8400 Pentium E6300 wolfdale (Family computer) Core2 E6300 (HTPC) Core 2 Q9550 I administer a small business server and all the client PCs are AMD (Best bang for the buck at the time). I want the keep the deployment relatively uniform, so I'll sticking be to AMD.
