Losing the points you've researched isn't that bad imo. Sure, it feels like you've wasted time but at the end of the day you get the tech quicker than you would have otherwise.

In my games it seems like the best tech alliance is a 3-way, with one on weapons, another on speed and the third on scanning and range. This way you have no clashes with tech progress. At the start it's usually best for the player with the most science to go on speed or range (depending on the map) but before long weapons becomes most important, followed by speed. Later in the game you'll probably only want to focus on weapons, with a little bit of speed if you can spare the time.

but i agree, its not that bad. its ur decision to research sth and to receive sth from ur allies, so points - and more importantly, TIME - burnt are ur own damn fault, so to speak. its alliance management at best.
