I've unexpectedly got a brand new GeForce GTX480, I'm wondering if would be best to get a new PSU since it as I understand is to weak for that graphicscard.
    The PSU is a Mushkin HP-580 at 580W and 38amps at +12V.

    The PSU : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817812004

Other components should be upgraded... I know... but here they are anyhow.
    CPU : AMD Phenom X3 8850
    MTB : Asus M2N-E
    RAM : Mushkin 8GB DDR2 (4x2GB)
    HDD : 1 x 1TB

The GTX480 won't eat your PSU. The Mushkin HP-580 is a pretty tough PSU that will power your machine easily.

The specs on a 480gtx say minimum of a 600watt PSU, however your PSU is 84% efficient, which is decent (most are less than 80%). I would find all the draw you have and see if it exceeds your 84% efficiency (which is 487 watts). If it does you'd be stressing your PSU to a breaking point.

    That PSU has 2 X 6 pin PCI-E plugs and you need 1 x 6 and 1 x 8 pin for a GTX480.

TBH I would get a new PSU if that was me.

    Never heard of Mushkin...

The wattage should be adequate, but I know not of the reputation of Mushkin. Had a look at a few reviews but they all use 8800GTSs which are far from representative of a GTX480. If you have the cash, I'd personally buy a new PSU.

    It has a 6 and a 6+2 pin plug doesn't it? Regardless, I'd get a new PSU.

Read the specs in the link it says 2 x 6 pin not 6+2.

    Actually it has 1x 6pin and 1x 8pin. I'm using the 8pin in my current HD2900Pro.

Unless your using a adapter the PSU in the link cant be the one you have??

Regardless the GTX480 will draw a lot of power on load I can vouch for that and I would get a better PSU.

Edit just for the confusion alone I wouldn't use it LOL

Can't explain it either, but I can promise that it actually got a 8pin connector to (actually a 6pin with 2pins extra that can be attached to the side so it becomes 8pin) :)

Another thing you might want to consider is selling the GTX480 if it's a brand new boxed card and grabbing a GTX570.
