    Hi all,

    Just need a bit of advice on a new graphics card to purchase. I'm in the process of building a new PC with the following pieces already bought ;

    Intel Core i7 950
    Sabertooth X58 MoBo
    Fractal Design R3 Case
    Samsung 1TB HDD
    6GB Corsair XMS Memory
    Corsair HX 850W PSU
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)

I'll be using my PC for mainly a lot of surfing, first person shooters (COD, Crysis etc.) and a lot of World of Warcraft (my current addiction!!!). I was originally planning on the Radeon 6870, however I'm torn whether to save up a bit extra and buy a Nvidia 580 as this seems the like latest and greatest on the market at the moment.

My monitor is a 21" model with resolution running at 1680 x 1050, so not sure if I would see that much of a speed in crease between the Radeon and the Nvidia card for such a resolution.

I would love to hear from anyone regarding what they would think is suitable / recommended for my build. Price is negotiable at the moment, obviously I don't want to be paying for something I couldn't really see the benefit of.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Gaz.

a gtx 570 might be a good comprimise for you, at a hundred quid less than the gtx 580 and still fantastic performance, I think even at that resolution, especially if you turn AA etc up you would easily see a differance between say a 570 and a 6870, What I'd really say for you to do though is hang on till the 25th of January, bit tech have just released an article stating the possible release date of a gtx 560 and that in my opinion would be perfect for your requirments, http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2011/01/13/nvidia-geforce-gtx-560-due-on-25-january/1, I reckon it will be considerable faster than even an overclocked 6950, but thats just a guess, if you really can't wait though I'd say look at gtx 570 or a 6950 and see if you can switch it to a 6970 :]

Funnily just looked at the 570gtx on scan's website!! Looks pretty good, I can hang on a couple of weeks to see what the 560 brings along. But for 250 ish quid the 570 looks like it could be the one!

    Thanks for the advice!

wow, yeah that is a very good price, if you can afford it I would go with that, but still hold on a couple of weeks to see what the 560 is like performance and price wise, hope that helps

The 580 is bad value for money because it is latest and greatest. With no direct AMD competition at that performance point nvidia have bumped up the price.

At your low res a 570 would be a better choice than 6970/50. For a lower price either wait for the 560 or get a 460.

So I'm probably guessing if I used 1680x1050 with a ton of AA etc. I should "get away" with a 570gtx? Anything greater / more expensive would be unnoticeable unless I had a higher res?

At less than 1920 x 1080 resolution a gtx is not 'getting away with it' a GTX 560 or 6870 would be pretty comfortable at that. The GTX570 is a powerful card designed to cope with most everything at 1920 x 1080 res, so it is plenty of power

Thanks to all those that told me to wait and hang on for the NVidia 560, looking at the reviews and the prices, it looks like just what I need for 1680x1050 gaming !!

    Cheers!
