I'd say he's shooting for May 15, same day as me-the CM contest wraps up then.

I really have to get my FTP working...

Sorry for the quick reply, I have to post this and get to an appointment for work. I'll address your comments upon my return! :)

Ok, I got the connector piece done last night. :)

First I started making paper templates to get the complex shapes in between the two pieces, but doing individual pieces didn't work out too well. I just couldn't get the angles right.

So I tried making one solid piece. This seemed to work better.

Having transferred the shape to the acrylic sheet, I started cutting it out.

    Then I added the bends.

After some trimming and rebending, I think I got it to the shape I wanted.

It fits pretty well in between the two pieces.

Some mockup shots of all three engine pieces in place, with drives mounted and the covers on.

As you can pretty well guess, this will all be lit up in the typical TRON fashion. Next I'll be adding some detail pieces and doing some masking to the covers to get them ready for paint.

looking great! Excellent progress so far!

What if you cut holes in the SSD covers, or something to let the orange color portion of the SSD be visible a little? Just a though since the engine is lit up orange in the images from the movie

    Thanks 23RO!

Yes, it will be a tight fit, the center drive will protrude out of the window cutout a bit. I think it looks ok.

    Thanks Waynio!

Thanks Nanosec, it will get progressively better with each update too! :naughty:

Thank you Alex, I need to keep striving to do my best if I am to keep up with you and your creativity lol!

    See Kayin's reply:

    Thanks Droih!

    Thank you riekmaharg!

This will be a blue lightcycle, which is the reason why I am covering the orange. To give you guys a hint at what I am trying to achieve, here is a shot of the hard drive covers I made for Neptune's Trident:

I'm using the same transparent blue acrylic, and will mask off the TRON graphics before painting. Then I'll be adding UV lighting everywhere. With any luck it will come out this vibrant!

Thank you bulldogjeff, here you go:

Moe work done on the SSD Engine...

Cut some detail pieces out of scrap acrylic.

    Filed & sanded.

Gluing them onto the base pieces.

    Almost done...

Here I made the masking templates for the drive covers using Adobe Illustrator. I downloaded the TRON font for the text.

I taped off the covers, cut out the templates and used spray adhesive to stick them onto the tape.

Then came the arduous task of cutting the masked areas and text.

The drive covers are now ready for paint. I mocked them up again so you can see how the paint graphics line up with the detail pieces on the other parts.

The finished engine will actually be a reverse of what you see here, with the engine being a metallic dark gray and the masked areas glowing blue.

    And work continues... :)

Have you seen how fast those would run in Raid 0 ? I don't know if you already said, but is that your plan?

I really like the addition of the SSD engine, it's really cool. It's a very detailed and intricate project it seems.
