    I find they help pick out my frequently-visited sites like Bit-Tech and Kara.

    You could make it a competition. ;)

    IE 4 and later will allow you to use an icon to represent your site in the bookmarks or favorites or whatever the hell IE calls the sites you like. You store it in the document root as favicon.ico and it gets pulled by IE automagically.

    for example http://linear1.org/ has one. Or Google.

    If you put a 32x32 (or 16x16) .ico file called favicon.ico in the site root folder, anybody (with IE4+) bookmarking the site gets it alongside the site name in Favorites.

    Or you can point to it with a line in the <head> code:

    <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.cpemma.fsnet.co.uk/fan.ico">

    The icon also appears in the IE url window instead of the default IE one, if bookmarked.

    Example at http://www.cpemma.fsnet.co.uk ;)

    IE is such krap. Yours doesn't show up for me in IE6 under XP or 98, and mine doesn't show up for me under IE6 under 98 but does on IE5.5 on 98.... *sigh*

    No problem IE6/98SE

    Odd-ball thing is that favicon only shows in the address window if you click from the Favorites link AFAIK.

    And they only last whils't the file is cached, so any I like I extract from the cache to a permanent folder and "change icon" for the link shortcut.

    I luv IE :D

    I was just fooling with mine today, for reasons unrelated to this post--if you have an old one cached, I'm pretty sure the current one has transparency.

    Hey bit-tech peeps. Resurrecting this favicon thread because I can't get the bit-tech favicon to appear in Firefox 4. It works for me in other browsers. Is it just me?

    Anyway I really like having a bit-tech icon in my toolbar to if this could be fixed I'll be stoked.

    Holy thread necro....

    I use FF4 on multiple computers, it works fine. If you just added it to your bookmark bar you will need to click it once and it should appear.

    I suppose I should have done this in the first place, I reinstalled FF4 and now it works. Weird.... ah well, thanks for your replies!
