AMD 770 based mobo, 2x2GB of RAM, and the AMD Athlon II X2 250. $155. $130 more for this ATI 6850 after rebate, and you're good. You don't need a case, PSU, HDD, optical drive or OS?

At this budget drop the cpu cooler, any small amount spend on that would be better spent on the core components.

Docodine's spec above is roughly what you can expect to get within the price that is still pretty good.

Personally though at this budget I would be looking used. Keeping with the HD6850 you may be able to pick up a Phenom X4 955BE, 870 AM3 MB & 4GB DDR3 for around the same price as the other kit new.

Above looks good. Don't bother with a cooler unless you must have it for audio purposes.
You may be able to unlock additional cores on the 255 but you need a mobo with a core unlocker feature (most of them do)

+1 to this! At that budget, you'll get so much more for your money if you buy used!

I never even thought of used but it's a great idea with a budget like this, especially if you're not in the market for the most current kit.

That entire setup will be fantastic for L4D2. My Laptop (M11x in sig) can play it quite happily at max settings (1366x768 with 4xAA/16xAF) so you should be fine.

Might be worth checking the required amps of the 8800GTX - My old coolermaster 500w power supply had fairly low amp ratings - and anything above a ATI 5770-Nvidea GTX 460 would be problematic.

Go the amd route best bang per buck
i suggest ebay as a good reasonable place if you find a good seller with 100% feedback, ask some questions as well.
