Just to strengthen the point, GFWL is horrible, HORRIBLE. And it continues to get on my nerves even though I've not had to play a gave that included it in a while.

I gifted someone that helps me out quite a bit with some mod work BulletStorm which uses GFWL on steam. Fine, then down the road I was gonna get him the DLC too, but seems you can't by that on Steam, only frigging GFWL, and you can't gift it.

    Grrrr.

Steamworks? Um, no thanks - I'll be boycotting this.

Sad to see Bethesda screwing over their customers like this - up to now they've been "sort-of" reasonable on the DRM-side.

Yes GFWL may be a pile of shite (never used it personally) but anything requiring online activation means customers can't choose where/when they play and lose out when support stops - and Steam has a few other nasty possibilities too.

You can play steam games in offline mode.

Not if Valve suspend or terminate your account you can't. You have to be online to install (which means Valve can block that at will) and, even with offline mode, you have to periodically reconnect so Steam can validate your account.

No, I get the impression that he just dislikes limiting DRM in general.

As painful as it is to say, Steam is the least of the many evils when it comes to modern DRM.

Bit gutted as I want the high fidelity of PC gaming combined with the achievements from GFLW....feels like a compromise everytime I have to choose between the formats...

Steam achievements arn't the same for me personally.

I know I'm totally out numbered on this but I do like it. Definately agree that MS need to invest a bit more on it and listen to the consumers...

I'll second that!!! I just tried to install/play Age of Empires Online and the Live product activation key I was given didn't work! Live sucks!

It's not just Steam. Anything that's not tangible and unrestricted is going to be snatched away by The Man. ;)

I prefer (indeed, insist on) being able to install and use what I purchase where and when I please, so GFWL (and similar systems like SecuROM Online, EA's "DRM-system-formerly-known-as-Securom" or Ubisoft's UPlay - should really have been called CantPlay) are as big a fail in that area.

Steam does have some nasty extra downsides due to every purchased game being linked to a single account but these have been discussed elsewhere.

What's wrong with GFWL? I don't think I've ever used it.

The Wither 2 got it right, you could buy it on Steam, or not. I chose not to (even though I'm a Steam fan in general and believe it went a long way to help PC gaming keep afloat) and boy I'm glad I did when the first patch arrived. 12mbs for non steam users, 9gig for Steam users because of some oddness that meant the entire game needed to be downloaded again.

Personally I like GFWL and steam for the social stuff. I like earning achievements on PC that count on xbox too, plus I can keep in touch with xbox friends while playing on my PC. In fact for single player games I get them on PC if they have GFWL instead of xbox.
PC graphics with xbox pad and xbox live social features is great for me.
