Right now ive decided to get the Dell U2711 i need a GPU to power it what one shall i get? Budget is not huge as spending £400 on the screen will knock me out for at least 2-3 weeks im looking to spend £200-£250.

Not going to be gaming as much as i used to but i want to know that if one day i have the urge to game then i have a capable GPU to handle the latest games

GTX 560 Ti 2gb with the ability to add another would be a good idea. 2x 560 ti 2gb will outperform a 1.5gb GTX 580. As usual, though, I'm gonna recommend waiting until the Kepler line is more fleshed out.

I'd say get a GTX570. But the realistic option?

Wait until the Kepler line fleshes itself out. Then make a decision.

I wouldn't go for the Ti 2GB, it doesn't have that much grunt to run all games very well at that resolution.

Yeah, the 448-core is great. Popped mine in a friend's computer to help convince him to upgrade from a 4830 on his U2711, runs battlefield 3 quite well, but definitely won't max it out.

I'd get it at that price in a heartbeat. That's a phenomenal deal, and you can always toss another one on the board when it starts to slow down.

What i would do is wait for Kepler med-range cards.

You have the GPU to use your U2711 right now. You can play games with it, with the same level as now (with the same resolution as you have now). Not great, obviously but it's temporary. What you can do to avoid the blurry image due to lowering resolution, is have the monitor set to 1:1 pixel mapping (Your monitor supports that), so basically.. no scaling. You'll get black bars all around.

Again, I know it sucks, but at least it will allow you to wait until Kepler lower end models. They are no official date set... but usually it's not far off from the flag ship. So probably end of this month, or the next.

    Sure.
If my GTX 6600GT can power a 1920x1200 screen resolution, I am sure the GTX 8400GS can manage Windows desktop, surf the web.

As for games, it comes down to resolution.. so lower it to what you have now, (assuming same graphical settings, of course), will lead you with the same performance, as you have now. (Assuming you play your games in full screen and not in window mode, else you'll run the game PLUS Windows desktop and that might be too much.)

The only time I see your 8400GS struggle is if you have a lot of windows open. It will be fine.. but you'll see a bit of choppiness.

As for your onboard GPU of your ASUS Maximus II for Core 2 Duo CPU's, (I assume that is what you have), Doesn't have any video output, so I don't know which modem you are referring, same for your Asus P5K-E WiFi AP.

But what I can say is that the max resolution via HDMI on Intel GPU's and your U2711, is 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 depending on your aspect ratio of your monitor. This is due that the Dell U series, has HDMI 1.2, same for Intel solution. The selection of this older HDMI connectivity probably has to do with the really high royalty fees imposed onto HDMI connection.

Ah ok, well same applies. Limited to 1080p via HDMI, by both the monitor and the Intel graphic solution. In term of gaming.

The Intel HD Graphics 2000 in your Core i3 should be a bit faster than your 8400GS on popular games, and expect some non-popular games to have large performance issues, or not work at all, and don't expect any good quality drivers, like what Nvidia and AMD provides, and don't expect often updates.. in fact expect 0 update as soon as a new CPU is out.

The problem in using your Intel, is that even on your desktop, you'll be limited to 1080p. So if you set your monitor is scale, you'll get hard to read text, and if not, you'll get a black surrounding all around, until you get a new GPU. So that would be the sacrifice, in your case.

Get one 448 core GTX560Ti now... then add another in a little while. That's what I'd do.
