Looking to expand my laptop memory with an SD card but I don't know what type will work the best with my card reader. It's a "3 in 1 digital media card reader". So I don't know if SDXC will work in it, whether I should get a 30mbps card or a 45mbps etc. I'm not being very helpful, but what do these 3 in 1 digital media card readers usually take?
I would have thought so, I think Windows ReadyBoost was a bit of a fad really. Also I doubt you'd see max speeds very often anyway, if it's small files, which I think most stuff in RAM would be (might be wrong there). How much RAM does your laptop have? And would it be possible to just get either another stick of RAM, or get a larger stick to replace what you've already got?
An SD card would probably be the worst way to expand your laptop's memory. A USB Flash Drive, portable HDD, Dropbox, or SkyDrive account would all be faster, and less expensive for the capacity.
Oops, sorry guys, when I said memory I meant storage memory, not RAM! 4GB RAM is plenty for me. My SSD (after you take away Windows and it's partitions) only has like 70GB left for my stuff. An extra 32gb on top of that for less than £15 seems like good value to me. The reason I want to use an SD card to expand the storage space as opposed to a usb or external hard drive is because it's invisible. I don't want a USB sticking out of my laptop 100% of the time. Speed isn't a massive issue as I'd probably just be putting music & videos on there which don't need to be rewritten often.
sandisk http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-32G...C98S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1354367046&sr=8-3 but really wouldn't do it myself TBH
ODD => Optical Disk Drive (CDROM, DVDRW, Blu-Ray) etc. If you have one, and don't need it- you can usually pull them out and drop in another 2.5" hard drive in their place (either a normal HDD or an SSD). If you're set on SD cards... then I recommend Class 10 Panasonic cards. The only SD cards that are made in Japan. A tad more expensive, but more reliable.
Optical disk drive, if you have a CD/DVD drive in your laptop that you rarely use it can be replaced with a caddy that will accept a standard 2.5" hard drive. It uses the SATA connection that the optical drive used. Edit: beaten to the punch
Nah it's an ultrabook, I know what an optical disk drive is just ODD didn't click for some reason xD. What's everyone got against SD cards btw? I'd much rather have a larger SSD obviously but wouldn't that cost too much? Just to clarify I've only picked SD cards because they're cheap!
The thing is I would have to take the current intel SSD out and sell it if I were to do that. I would then have to buy a 256gb SSD. This would double my available space but it sounds costly and I don't know which SSDs would be compatible?
is there a mSATA slot in your ultrabook? my Lenovo has a boost SSD in there that can be exchanged. they are slower then SSD but still faster then any SD card. say a 256GB crucial mSATA card for 100 on scan the other week.
One of the things that you have to be careful with is the fact that SD cards are not made to be accessed repeatedly like a hard drive. They have limited read/write cycles, and don't even come close to SSDs for a lifespan.
I wouldn't know how to check... I'd much rather have an SSD expansion as has been said above, just not very confident at selling things on ebay which would be compulsory if I were to buy a 256gb SSD
This is the SSD my ultrabook has: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/...nal/solidstate/upto128gb/ssdsc2cw120a3k5.html
