Hi guys, Just wondering if anyone has experience with tilers and the costs? I've got 2 quotes so far, £250 and £550, so there's a massive discrepancy. Basically the job is: Approx 40-50 tiles (30x40cm) which have already been purchased. 3 walls around the bath (half height as they are already part tiled) Installation of a permanent shower curtain rail and a shower head holder. What sort of prices would you expect to pay for labour and materials?
You know it really isn't that hard to do yourself, if you have the time and get a tile cutter, especially with large tiles like the ones you're using.
The larger the tiles, the straighter the wall has to be in order for them to sit flush. Your wall looks plaster-boarded, so that seems OK. Make sure that you use waterproof tile adhesive and waterproof, mould resistant grout (we used swimming pool grade stuff on ours). Use plastic tile spacers. Start from the middle (and from the edge of the bottom tiles) and work upwards and into the corners of the wall. Then cut the remaining tiles to measure. Keep in mind that your walls may be slightly crooked relative to each other.
I recently renovated our second bathroom and I had a very similar tile job. It was about the same area, but I had smaller tiles (I also had already purchased the tiles). I called a guy who came highly recommended from family members, and he wanted about $400 for the job. You're in London and I'm in Texas, but it's another data point for you. After getting such a high bid, I just did it myself. Tiling isn't very hard at all; it's just messy if you don't do it for a living and know all the insider secrets. I was willing to pay for the convenience of having someone else do it, but in the end there was a certain satisfaction of doing it myself.
We have ours done, slightly larger area as it was 3 walls full height, I bought the tiles. Cost £300 all in and unlimited cups of tea while he was working haha. Just another point for you. Matt
£250 is probably about right for a pro to do a decent job, £500 is fantasy for big tiles. If you were using tiny tiles that would need a lot of effort it would be a different story, but the bigger the tile the easier it is (on a flat wall anyway). Be brave and DIY.
Easy enough to do. Do it yourself. Just don't let the adhesive/grout dry on the tiles. It's pain to get off when hardened.
Seems I differ from the other members, i think the higher estimate is more realistic it you want a good job.
heya , couldn't help noticing your driveway could use relaying....can give a fantastic price , got the tools right here
Sorry for the double post, back to pricing I think it depends a lot on where you live. I would have thought that to do that job well is 3days.
So long as you keep it tidy as you go along, you've got nothing to worry about. (My dad made me retile the primary bathroom over summer). Wet finger to smooth out the grout does a much better job than the finishing tool ever could.
