I have no idea why folks recommend mse. It fails anti virus benchmarks and Even Microsoft say to use something else. I don't visit download sites porn sites etc. I run a script blocker on my browser I still have had the occasional pop up from avg. Once from a usb that was used on a work customer pc. Another from a hacked website. Just because you don't have boobs popping up every 5 mins when using your computer doesn't mean your not a malware victim. Surely it pays malware writers to keep the software subtle so it's not detected by the user. Even if people are confident in mse plus their computer usage patterns for their own protection. It's not legit to recommend proven ineffective anti virus(Confirmed by the authors) as you don't know how the recommendee is going to use their computer.
As someone who regularly visits filthy porn sites, I have no problems with MSE as a daily. It's fast, efficient and secure. I use adblocker anyway, so I don't get dodgy popups. With a little knowhow, You CAN have your cream pie and eat it, it seems
Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection seems to be the choice of enterprises nowdays. Very low desktop footprint with minimal resource utilisation. Symantec is seeing increased adoption due to their integration with DLP solutions as well.
I think unqualified recommendations are usually a bad thing full stop, and I would never recommend MSE without explaining the disadvantages. However, for some situations MSE is still sufficient and may be preferable. I think for Malware protection (which is generally the main problem these days) good practice online and an up to date browser is probably more important. If people are tricked into downloading Malware and willing follow associated instructions there is not much even the best AV can do.
