    I have a Asus P8H61-M LE/USB3 and am having issues with a i3-3240.

The CPU fan spins for a second and then stops, this is repeated.

It's currently setup on a desk so can't be shorting.
    Have tried different RAM.
With and without a graphics card.
    Different PSU.

When I remove the RAM and switch on, the fan runs full speed with beeps (1 long and 2 short)...

Unfortunately, the spare CPU (i3-2100) I have won't run in this motherboard as the onboard GPU on the CPU doesn't work...

The i3-3240 and the i3-2100 both work fine in another motherboard.

A BIOS update is required to run the CPU
    or
    Motherboard is dead

    Which one could it be?

Also, did you use thermal paste?

    Only a bit.

    Shall I add some more?

Edit: paste removed and re-applied (more of it this time) but still same issue.

Is the CPU fan connected to the correct header labelled CPU_FAN or similar on the motherboard?

Can you temporarily install a graphics card with the i3 2100 to test/update the BIOS?

Do you know what revision Asus P8H61-M LE/USB3 it is ? And what BIOS version it's running.
Going on what i read from here the minimum BIOS version for the i3-3240 is 3605, released in March 2012.

But for a rev.P0 board it would be supported with BIOS version 4104, released in May 2012.

    This,
but L1 and P0 are cpu revisions (core steppings) not board. P0 is for new ES/QS processors, so bios 3605 will be fine for a retail i3-3240.
An i3-2100 should work with very first bios 0305.

Unfortunately, even with the graphics card the CPU doesn't work in the motherboard.

    It's revision 3 and unfortunately, I can't check the BIOS version :(

Yes, the motherboard only has two headers and I've plugged in to the CPU one.

Due to faulty iGPU the 2100 doesn't work.

I'm thinking of getting a second opinion on the socket pins (I have weak eyesight and struggling with glasses and magnifying glass :()

Make a photo with flash - it sometimes help to spot bent pins.

Have just taken the motherboard for a second opinion and no bent pins.
