Hi All, been out of the build game for some time and looking to upgrade don't have any major issues gaming on the current pc (other than some slow down in Doom) so will mainly be for software development hence need for a powerful CPU,

    cheers guys

    Budget:
£800 but happy to go a little more if there is significant benefit

What that budget needs to include:
    Processor (potentially a cooler)
    MOBO - Matx if possible
Memory (32gb if not too much) - just seen the 64GB Kingston fury black!!
    M2 card (250GB)
    possibly PSU

What the main uses of the PC will be. Software development and Some Gaming

    Existing PC
    Corsair Carbide 540 (being re-used)
    5-6 ssds and a gtx760 (being re-used)
    i7 860 (7-8 years old)
    Gigabyte p55ud5
16GB Ram (DDR3 bought at same time as processor)

The native resolution of your monitor. 2 * 2560-1440

Whether you will be overclocking or not. unlikely

How much storage space you require. M2 card @ roughly 250 GB (existing ssds and a Nas already owned)

Do you have any special requirements?
Low noise / power if possible
MATX if possible as would consider putting in MATX case eventually
    32GB Ram a preference
    DDR4 a preference also

    my initial thoughts
    Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail - 290
    Gigabyte GA-Z170MX-Gaming-5 Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard - 140
    Samsung 950 Pro 256GB M.2 PCI-e 3.0 x 4 NVMe Solid State Drive - 140
    Kingston Fury Black 64GB (4x16GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C15 2400MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit - Black (HX424C15F - 200
be quiet! Shadow Rock LP Low Profile CPU Cooler - 120mm - 30
    Total ~ 800

You may find this stuff cheaper elsewhere. You haven't specified a colour scheme either, so I figure that doesn't matter.

    5820k

    Ram

    Board.

That brings you to £662. For a cooler I would get an AIO, so something like this (that also depends on your overclocking too)

    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raijintek-triton-240mm-aio-water-cooling-solution-hs-016-rt.html

    Bringing you to £723.

Brings you to £803 or so however that's not one of those riduculous drives it's a regular SATA 3 speed drive. In which case I would recommend just getting a SATA 3 SSD as you will get a better one for that much money.

I'd assume your PSU is ~7 years old as well? Noisy? 80Plus-low end?

Does your s/w dev work benefit from threads over frequency? Or not an issue?

If yes, opt for the X99 system with 6C/12T CPU over the Z170: Broadwell-E is launching in June too, this might have a knock-on to prices of existing chips or new ones available. But then your budget will jump a bit and limiting yourself to mATX on X99 is a bit limiting because there's very few mATX options and ATX will give you 8 DIMM slots and some upgrade potential to 128GB DDR4. If you go X99 look for the latest refresh boards - they are just launched with the latest features, not like the original series that launched in 2014. If you're keeping your rig for several years, it's worth it. X99 will also make the SSD small% faster as it'll be connected to CPU PCIE direct not via PCH PCIE.
My X99 rig with 5960X is semi-passive: 80% of the time no fan is running. It switches on the single fan when it gets over 45C. Zero noise, very low power.

That costs a whooping £620 - that wouldn't fit within his budget of £800! :)

paired with my 760gtx this is excellent and absolutely silent not even a murmur.
