Hi, Sure I am missing something but in my BIOS my RAM only shows it running at 2133. Both XMP profiles show 3600 but the speed doesn't change. On CPUID it lists it at 1600 (which I presume is 2133 in reality). What am I missing? I'm on a B550 MSI Tomahawk with latest flash etc. Thanks in advance - it's winding me up no end!
Ignore me. It seems I am a tit. I was failing to save changes as I exit BIOS (was too busy tinkering with fan settings and forgot I had changed profiles.
Although - now in CPU-Z the DRAM frequency is set at 1799 (assumed to be 3600) but under SPD it still says Max bandwidth is DDR4-2133(1066 MHz). Should I be concerned with this? BIOS seems correct.
SPD is the programmed defaults of the ram, not the speed it is running at, if you set ram too fast and have to do a bios reset or it fails training the SPD setting is what the RAM will default to so you can get running again.
Yes, it will normally have a couple of speeds but speeds like 3600 are XMP/overclocks not official standards, not sure JEDEC goes any higher than 3200 (not researched it, so don't quote me )
Time to update your signature Tagging on to this thread. What's people's view on safe DDR4 RAM voltages? Most kits these days list 1.35v for their XMP profile, does it mean 1.4v is still considered safe if pushing the OC a bit beyond XMP speeds?
After 1.5v you maybe need to give consideration to cooling, in fact with my board I get instability without cooling here as my power ICs are next to DRAM so when pushing hard it all gets toasty but that is on TR with memory on both sides of board, unlikely to happen on normal Ryzen. My mem instability happens at quite low temp of ~60 something C, so I use a fan. 1.4 is fine.
Thank you both. I'll have 1.4v as my upper limit. I've managed to overclock two single stick pack A-Data 16GB 3000 CL16 sticks to 3400 MHz, same timing, dual channel, at 1.365v. They are B-die 2 rank and only costed me £104 for 32GB
