good work so far. this is a really awesome case design. though i think it might have been cooler if you would have cut the U-shape top into at least 2 sections to allow for the side to ocme off without too much fuss... but to each his own! lol a little late suggestion as i have only been a member a few days now. lol but keep up the good work. and rock on!

That's not a bad suggestion, I never have liked U-shape cases. I've had this case for some years now and have taking it off down to a science. :thumb: I'll give it a thought. Oh and welcome to the forums, I've only been a member for a few weeks myself.

Very cool case so far -

Might I offer just one piece of tiny advice? -
I think the metal on the sides of your hole will block airflow, it looks like the fan blades extend to the outside of the cut. You might want to make the opening a little bigger to account for this. I know you have already done the art for this, but I think it would be quieter and have more airflow if you did.

    That's all - thanks.

    Update 2004-05-12

I spent a few hours last night working on the stealth mounting bracket for the blowhole. My blue LEDs havn't come in yet. I've been stalking the mailman all week :miffed:

    Pictures

It is a beautiful day for modding
    [IMG]
I started by laying out a 120mm square of plexi for the 80mm fan
    [IMG]
Oops broke rule #2 again. :dremel:
Here is the mounting bracket all cut out
    [IMG]
I countersunk the screws and frosted the plexi with some sandpaper
    [IMG]
Finally I used the dremel with a router bit to make holes for the LEDs
    [IMG]
I plan on using blue LEDs instead of these amber ones

Looks really nice so far, the only problem I see is the design for the hole over the fan, as DreamTheEndless said maybe it will block airflow?

I love the tribal sun. It looks great in those colors. I like the looks of the grill, but I agree that it will probably suck as far as air flow goes.

The blow hole is more for looks than function. I ran it at 6v and the fan was quiet while still pushing some air out the top. For the 120mm in the front I'll make sure to keep the hole large enough. Thanks for the advice all of you. I'm in the middle of my next update. Probably won't be finished until tomorrow though.

    Update 2004-05-13

I got a lot done the last few days. Got home yesterday and mowed the lawn while waiting for the mailman :miff:. He didn't bring my LEDs again.
That got me thinking. I really do want a window in this case. I just couldn't stand to do another square window. I also liked the cut out flames I've been seeing and decided on a window in the side panel.

    So without further delay...

    Picuters
    [IMG]
The pattern I made has holes in it and white chalk was rubbed on the pattern
    [IMG]
The chalk after the pattern is lifted away
    [IMG]
2 hours and 1/2 a roll of masking tape later
    [IMG]
After about an hour with the dremel the window is about 1/2 way done
    [IMG]
Guess what came in the mail today?
The LEDs for the DVD mod
    [IMG]
Lets void that waranty shall we?
The DVD slot in the day, nice and subtle
    [IMG]
It looks very nice with the lights down

    Nice flames!

Thanks for the reply about how you were gonna paint the flames, guess I should have really read the whole thread rather than skimmed and looked at all the pretty pictures.

    Update 2004-05-16

Sorry for only a minor update. Friday I spent the entire day in the hospital with my father. He had a panic attack in court and we thought it may have been another heart attack. Luckly it wasn't :). Anyway I have a minor update now that everything is ok.

The whole blue/silver theme is ruined by the green/red leds
    [IMG]
Now with the blue/white LEDs I give it a C+
    [IMG]
I used this guide by bard to make my own "vandal resistant" switch

That's all for now kiddies. :dremel: Mod on!

Yeah I do! I'll look into that next time I go to the "Evil Nasty Place". That's what my dad and I call the tool shop we go to.

    Bonus update 2004-05-16

I had a great day modding today. I hope someone else did too! I picked my dad up a hole saw to replace the one I broke (thanks Tech-Daddy) and a pack of small dremel disks (Dremel 409).

    Pictures
    [IMG]
Here I started the detail with the small cutoff disk
    [IMG]
Half way through the day and half way done with the hole
    [IMG]
Once the flames were cut out I put a slight belev on them with a router bit
    [IMG]
Here is a full shot of the window with a test piece of lexan behind it

I plan on using glazing putty to fix the areas where the dremel mared the surface. Then I'll sand and shoot another coat of primer. Now I can't decide how I want to light it. One option is to get some EL Wire. Another option use LEDS. The final option is a sound activated cold cathode. I'm still undecided. The window was not in the original plans so I'm still undecided. Maybe I'll do some design work in photoshop tomorrow.

*note* links are just the first place that came up on google. I have done no comparison shopping.

Ok, I must have missed something in "Metalbutchery 101"
What is Glazing putty? and have I just done the hardest thing possible to fix marred surfaces?

(mutters to himself for not searching the forum and the Internet first b4 "thinking" he knew the best way to handle surface imperfections.... :wallbash: :duh: )

AWESOME looking flame work! Can't wait to see them finished! Looks GREAT!!!

Glazing putty is a thin type of body filler. It is usually used after bondo to take care of any small air pockets. It will fill small scratches prety well. My father uses it on his boat to take care of scratches left by rocks. I'll let you know how well it works.

    Sketchup is cool

I downloaded the sketup demo last night. All I can say is cool. I didn't do any real modding as I was playing with sketchup.
