I found I had this problem with some XP machines until I specifically told XP to share folders, as it DISABLES this by default.

Can't remember where the option is now thou :(

Xp has some kind of "file protection" thing for its system files, you probably have that enabled. I can't remember how to disable it though, and I can't be arsed to reboot into windows to check :D

I'm sure a google will help

    Cheers

    Sam

to check the status of the xp firewall goto network connections, right click on the network adaptor, go into advanced and its there in a tick box

ok I have found the source of the problem, well It is for me I dunno about others.

    Code:
    Internet connection settings:

    Internet connection:	Local Area Connection
    Internet Connection Firewall:	enabled
    _______________________________________________________________________
    Network settings:

    Computer description:	shuttle
    Computer name:	SHUTTLE-O-L337
    Workgroup name:	WORKGROUP

The Shared Documents folder and any printers connected to this computer have been shared.
    _______________________________________________________________________
Connection to your network:	1394 Connection

As you can see I'd get the internet via the LAN port, but a connection to the network would use the 1394 Connection (FireWire port)
I dont use the firewire port, its just part of the mobo.

I need to know how to set up the network so it use's the lan port for network access and internet. btw im using a router.

I went stright to "view workgroup computer" expecting it to work (as you do  )

But Im still getting the same error :wallbash:

its because you dont have a terminal services server running on your network...

    :eyebrow:
you have remote desktop enabled you mean, not terminal services running
just put in the name of the machine or its ip address instead...

aww man, I just tryied new workgroup names resetting the router to default factory settings.

The only thing I can think of now is when I have "sygate" firewallinstalled, and when i uninstalled it had changed some settings. :(

just formatted the windows partition on the shuttle.

With the guest account turned off I get a password promt. the admin password doesnt work and a blank doesnt.

when I turn the guest account on I get this error message when trying to access the shares.
