In the words of Avenue Q:

The internet is really really great
    For porn
I’ve got a fast connection so i don’t have to wait
    For porn
    There's always some new site,
    For porn!
I browse all day and night
    For porn!
It's like i’m surfing at the speed of light
    For porn!

    The internet is for porn,
    The internet is for porn,
Why you think the net was born?
    Porn porn porn!

Do Macs give you access to better quality knuckle-chutney fodder? Is that available from apple.com?

Had an icident about 2 months ago at my work along those lines.

I work for a big chain of 4 star hotels in the UK. The IT Techs we had really are stupid though, there is NO firewall on any part of the network, and only a few computers run really out dated anti virus software (ours is on of the few with it).

One day I came into work and found the IT guys telling my boss that we'd now loss all of our work we'd done since the last time we'd backed up (never) and that there was nothing that could have been done. Also said they found lots of porn on the computer.

This really did my head in cause it was obvious there was alot of pop ups, adaware etc. but 10 minutes with an external hd doing a quick backup would have saved all the work for us.

Morale of my story? Not sure. Nice column :)

As an IT Contractor I've worked for many big name blue chip companies.

The one I am at is altogether the other extreme:
No HTTPS (so no waitrose, tesco, amazon etc)
No Downloading of ANYTHING (its all blocked)
Internal Internet usage reports (though I've not seen evidence of these)
Lots of hrefs are edited so you cant click on them
    No cookies!
Special dispensation required for administrator privledges for developer machines.
Special dispensation for external email address.
    All browsers 'locked down'
The blocked sites number in the hundreds...

Cetainly they dont have a porn or virus problem, but neither can developers get into certain forums due to http restrictions. No downloading of sample code or documents.... a right royal pain.

The other side of the coin is very hard to handle....Think about how much of the intert you could use if your employer restircted YOUR access! You'd have to work for a living! ;)

I started with an Apple IIe running CP/M, and had nothing in the file recovery line, an embarrassment when I accidentally deleted the good copy of a database instead of the corrupt one.

When PCs came along, PC-Tools (Norton's big rival) was ordered straight away. ;)

No internet then, we had to manage with Playboy.
