I have a Giga-Byte Radeon 9800XT and overclock the core pretty high w/ ATITool for air cooling (see sig). The problem is, when I overclock my graphics memory, I immediately see artifacting in games. This happens even when my core is not OCed. However, when I scan for artifacts using ATITool, nothing comes up.

I know the memory generates a lot of heat, and the airflow around my video card isn't the greatest (adding another fan to side panel later), but seriously... .5Mhz OCing RAM and I get artifacts!??!?! :eyebrow:

Plz help in any way you can. Thanks :p

5 million operations per second is a pretty big increase tbh, and its probably the straw breaking the camel's back. As such, I would reccomend getting some RAM sinks on those suckers as well as a fan.

Oh, and its Gigabyte, not Giga-Byte. :D

any speed over stock is a bonus, don't whine if it won't overclock. Sounds like the ram is just maxxed tbh.

But 9800XT's have the RAM sink on the back. :sigh:

Edit: Actually I have to underclock .5Mhz for it work...I was just wondering jeez :miffed:

Perhaps you should remove that copper thing from the back and consider some RAM sinks, thermal epoxy them for better results ;) I'll admit I put some thermal tape Tweakmonsters on my 9800 Pro and i've had no increase in clock speed. Eitherway they look the dogs and they do get warm so they do serve a purpose :D

Can you get mem codes off any of the chips? might give an idea as to their default fsb/rating :D

Should I really take the copper thing off the back? It does act a big heatsink, doesn't it. I'm going to stick a fan on the side panel to blow on the card in a couple weeks. I would think that would make it cooler than RAM sinks....but what do I know  :D

Where can I find the mem codes??? What are they anyways? :worried:

There'll be some sort of code written on the RAM, write it down and post it for us :)

If you take off the ramsinks and take a look at the chips on the card you'll find some numbers/letters on them. Post what you find :)

    For instance:

    Winbond
    338WF
    W924508BH-5

    ;)

I have a 9800Pro and the RAM won't overclock well at all. It runs at XT speeds quite nicely (the core), but the ram needs underclocking 2MHz to work properly. I guess that's the limit I can get out of the ram :(

when i sold my 9800xt after pre ordering my x800xtpe in may i bought a 9800pro 128mb card. when i overclocked it to 440 core and 385 ram it shat all over my 9800xt.

lesson i didnt learn. the pro cards overclock more than the xt cards.

but what the heck i love my xt models always gotta have the best
