I thought FSW was what the US army used to train their soldiers?

Whatever happened to training exercises with all the joy of having being awake 72 hours straight, going waist-deep in freezing cold ditchwater, and eating mouldy biscuits and lukewarm bags of dog food?

Real combat and warfare is an experience that can't be simulated. That $50 would have been better spent on keeping the troops actually fighting warm, fed and safe.

I doubt that the joys of real training will go away. The virtual training would probably be supplemental. I get the feeling that virtual training is cheaper than the real thing, and therefore, the soldiers can have more time being trained. But that still doesn't mean the real thing won't be used; as you said, you can't simulate the real thing.

It's hardly a game is it?

Its a virtual simulation / training environment. It's not like there will be God Mode cheats, Monsters and zombies to shoot and 13 year old kids pwning and calling each other n00bs.

    See.

I want to play these kinds of games because they sound fun - I'm a big fan of realism with things like this, but preferably without the 'join the army' stuff..

    "Paid".

"Payed" is, in that context, a piece of delinquent txtspk which belongs alongside "rediculas" and "unfortunatly" in the sin-bin of YouTube Comment English.

Some place, some time, not so far away, a soldier trained by video games lays in a field hospital.

Sergeant: "What the hell was going through your mind, boy?"
Private: "I thought that, if I fired from far enough away, nobody wouldn't notice they were being shot and would just stand there."

    ???????special hardware?????? -wierd
Hasn't the US army been spending money on this sort of training device for ages? addmitably the implementation seems more individual this time, I'm looking forward to seeing a discovery channel special on this.

It's only $50 million, calm down.

We spend what, $10 billion per month in Iraq?
