100M network yeah cause i like to access things at 8MB/s

agree with the consensus that its neat but cant think why i would need it

maybe if i did a lot of off site backups but i don't so.....

 

could be useful for a network admin, but not the majority of the public.

 

for some reason gigabit network seems to be an issue for many hardwarevendors.
Cheap NAS boxes and netbooks come without...

 

Good idea, ultimately flawed.

 

"Instant" Backups, say for example you work in a Pc repairment Shop, you could Plug some HD at the same time to speed up your work, you know, if you get say three of these, connect them to your shop litle network and its done, without the need to connect every single HD at a time to your storage PC.

I see this could be used this way, since here many ppl buy PC for the simple use, you know, having no idea of partitions and stuff, so they just save all their data in single HD's.

And yes, i said "Instant" cuz the Fast Ethernet port is a shame

 

A lot of people only have 10/100 LANs, so Gigabit wouldn't be any faster.
Speaking for myself, whilst I intend to upgrade my stuff, just at the moment all of my (limited) array of equipment is 100mbit.

 

Well, if it ain't gigabit - I won't use it. Shame. I have one of these in USB2/eSata and it's very handy.

 

i use a spare 250gb hdd for data travel between home and uni; i cant get 8gb steam games to compress so they fit my 2gb memory stick. and i'm too cheap to give money for a decent portable hdd. this would be easy so i don't have to open the computer at home each time.

 

Agreed! I worked at a Pc Shop doing the repairs and the other technical stuff and had a lot of hard drives to test, singles or from a pc and it's a life and time saviour. Someone who also get's to fix buddy's pc's it's a valuable asset since he hasn't to open his pc to plug in the drives, even with hot swap.

But I do agree on one thing, it's a niche item.

 

For £45 the processor in this unit probably wouldn't have the power to deal with a gigabit connection anyway, which why I'm guessing is why sharkoon didn't bother also they probably wanted to keep the cost down.

 

Hmm - I need one of these for my business I'm opening soon. Also I would need an IDE and Wide/Narrow SCSI version! As well as a 2.5 laptop IDE version..

 

I can't see myself buying this. I'd rather invest in a proper external drive that is safe to take anywhere.

 

Not worth it.
It should have had gigabit, it's not like gigabit is exactly expensive these days. If you havent yet, go and check prices on gigabit switches, especially used. At this point there is little excuse for not using gigabit.

While someone said it is probably because of the the chip, they just released one with SATA 3. This seems like they are headed backwards.

 

can this be used as a network usb hub aswell, my usb pots have stopped working on my laptop want this as a temporary stop gap

 

Although I've not read the manual, I'd say no. USB over a network required clevery funky drivers etc, this isn't the sort of device for that.

 

Better to get a USB PCMCI or expresscard adapter.

It's cheaper and serves a greater purpose.
