    What on earth is this modern "reached out to" drivel?

    The word "contacted" is for that situation. If I'm drowning, I'll reach out to someone.

    Reached out would indicate to me you are waiting for a response, or in the case of drowning no one has yet saved your life.

    Contact on the other hand would say to me that you have had a coming together, that someone has grab your hand as you gasp your last breath before sinking to the inky blackness.
