I looked into upgrading my single bay Synology NAS, but of all the NAS out there I found the best idea was to get a HP Microserver for £145, use XPEnology to boot synology VIA USB stick and you can have up to 4 drives... I've lost faith in pre made NAS now as the hardware price seems excessive, or the software/functions they give are poor...

That's a bad idea, because XPEnology illegal and unreliable. Sure they patch the kernel, so that it works on other PCs, but they can't do anything about the Synology's proprietary stuff (whose distribution is illegal).

On those NAS, you are paying for the OS as well (kinda like Apple).

I think the only way out is to install and help NAS distros, like OMV, FreeNAS or NAS4free. For example, if OMV became more feature complete and user friendly, it'd be able to compete with Synology or QNAP easily.
