Because a smartphone does the job, why need a tablet.

Ah, the more things change... To quote a 1985 BBC News piece:
I remember how we fixed that, too: we invented the annual upgrade cycle. Doesn't really work for a low-power tablet people just browse Facebook on, though.

MY iPad Air 2 is superb, despite being out since 2014 it still holds its own. My wife has a Galaxy Tab 2 10 inch tablet and that is still going strong too.

Yeah unless you are an extreme tablet gamer it's not the sort of thing you need to upgrade much. My wife had a Galaxy 10" tablet for over two years, then it packed up. She then got an Ipad but only because she fancied one. She is a meta admin for Dmoz, so she just edits on it.

Saying that I think extreme tablet gaming sorta died any way. Not seen any must have games for a tablet recently. I have some £40 thing I bought (7") that does the job perfectly and having both a 5.5" phablet and a Blackberry Passport my mobile internet needs are more than met. Both are great for forums/youtube etc.

I wonder if the Nintendo Switch will be classed as a tablet by IDC next year.

My nexus 7 (2013) is looking a little battered from heavy day to day use, might need replacing soon but im hoping a successor comes out in the near future.

Not all that much room left between ever cheaper large screen smartphones and ever more portable touch screen laptops.

the thing is tho, i personally want a phone that doesnt make me look like an obnoxious **** when using it and i want something smaller than a laptop that fits inside my jacket pocket.

7" tablet is the portable computing sweetspot imo

Bought a refurbished Dell Venue11 Pro with Windows 10 preinstalled so I could browse the internet and control Teamspeak while I play a game. I also use it to watch films (either streaming or copied across) or YouTube while I exercise. It does everything I want, just like my Xperia Z3. Nothing more, nothing less.

No need to upgrade, is all.

Nothing wrong with using a tablet or two, I do so myself as well, but I think a lot of people will just use other devices instead and save themselves the money for a tablet.

5" smart phone (HTC One M9) - Phone (obvs!), sat-nav, FB, email, and light browsing
10" tablet (Google Nexus 10) - Watching films/Tv during lunch break (or connect to hotel TVs to watch when awy on work)
PC for pretty much everything when at home

    Suits me to a T.

Although would prefer a dedicated music device and a camera to save the battery on the phone, but I'll get there...

Reasonably priced models are missing, and the same goes for the "convertibles"

I have one that was offered for a few weeks only, and have yet to find a similar one that's not at least twice the price...
It's two years old and I'd upgrade, but not for twice the money.

Tablets also suddenly got a whole lot more expensive at one point, with sometimes lower specs than before even, and that makes people wonder why they would bother if they can also get a large phone for their cash.

That reminds me, I must look into flashing my old Nexus 7 2012 with something that makes it usable again.

    It's definitely why I don't use a tablet.

Especially as most of the current Android tablet offerings are rubbish...
