That shroud looks SO plasticky. I couldn't live with it in my case.

I might consider buying a high-spec motherboard, like this one come next upgrade time, if I could buy one which isn't larded-up with all sorts of cosmetic fripperies, which I won't see in a windowless case and I don't want to pay for.

I love Asus' many provisions for fan controls, and always look to them first for a mobo. But I don't need light shows and a plastic shroud designed only to trap heat. I do want multiple flat M.2 docks, with heat spreaders that actually help if that's possible.

So are we officially at that stage in computing where you can't buy high-end components anymore that don't light up like Christmas trees? Seriously, if manufacturers could please remember that adults also build computers, that would be very nice.

I wouldn't worry about the absence of a "heat sink" ala MSI...

Tldr (or should that be Tldw?): The side of the SSD facing the motherboard actually runs hotter with the MSI heat trap in place.

Unfortunately, they tested with an old SSD which has components on both sides, so yes it would likely run hotter on the underside. However, our testing using an M.2 SSD someone would actually buy, such as the 960 Evo, which only has components on the top side in contact with the heatsink, would likely benefit - which it did in our initial MSI board review according to Samsung's software. Samsung ships its Evo and Pro with heatsink labels on the underside too. Not saying their testing is completely wrong, but I reckon the result would be very different with a 960 Evo or 960 Pro.

:D I agree that the combination of plastic shroud and cardboard wouldn't be the most aesthetically pleasing :D
