Dolby digital vs DTS
http://www.techtronics.com/uk/images...by-digital.gif vs http://www.techtronics.com/uk/images/icons/dts.gif
I know DTS is technically superior, but im after subjective opinions ;) If you were backing up a DVD and had the choice - which of the two soundtracks would u keep? Curious to see what other people think :D |
From the DVDs that I own with both DTS and DD soundtracks (I have a few now), I would say I prefer the DTS on all of them. The differences are sometimes fairly subtle but overall it just sounds... better. You know what its like with audio - often something sounds better but you cant put your finger on why exactly. Anyway thats my humble opinion.

DTS is not technically superior to Dolby Digital.
As for quality this is a totally subjective point, it has been discussed before: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthrea...&highlight=DTS Personally I have found DTS be wither worse or Equal to Dolby Digital 5.1. I have yet to hear a DVD with a DTS Track that is clearly better than the Dolby Track. This page seem an interesting read. http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/adbarr/page1.html Quote..... Any argument for or against a particular system must be based on competing coding schemas. DTS's supporters claim that it is superior to Dolby's system because it uses a higher bitrate and less aggressive compression scheme. These two facts are essentially irrelevant in determining whether DTS is 'better' than Dolby Digital: neither automatically equates to higher sound quality. The quality of both systems stands or falls on the effectiveness of their respective compression and perceptual coding systems. Both systems use extremely effective coding systems. As both systems are based on completely different technologies, and rely on human perception, there is no technical or scientific means to determine which is 'better'. Quote...... In the end, any decision about which system(s) you choose to adopt must be based on your own individual preferences; your own two ears will always be the best judge when it comes to deciding which system sounds best to you. |
On the DVD's I have that have both audio formats, I (and this is subjective) feel that the DTS had a bit more Bass, but that's about it. I use to actively seek out DVD's with DTS, but I rarely bother now and stick with DD
I also read once that DTS tracks are usually louder (i.e mastered at higher sound levels) than their AC3 counterparts. |
