The painting, built up a thick coat in the three bands, then sanding random areas to varying depths, always up-down...

So did you tap those 7/16" holes ? Teflon tape is not something I would trust in acrylic.

I may be inclined to mill those holes with a 1/2" router bit in drill press and use weld-on with 1/2"...
