I've fixed it - it would not boot from a Vista/7 disc, but I used a Ubuntu live CD and repaired the MBR via Terminal.

Scan have just emailed me saying that a BIOS update was required and now it's booting fine. So I guess all it required was a simple update - although the X4 940 is technically compatible...

You would ideally want a Radeon HD 2xxx series...

You would ideally want a Radeon HD 2xxx series card or Geforce 9400GT as they have HDCP and will have HD hardware accelerated decoding, which will help decoding TV streams / Blu Ray / MKV etc.
