GTX980 backplate not watercooling

Can I use a backplate for my MSI GTX980 Gaming 4G card and leave it on air ie cover the stuff on the back as it gets my goat!

I tried HFS and MacDrive but both couldn't see the drive on my pc for some odd reason. Drive was and is seen perfectly fine on my old iMac so only way I have found to move the files was by networking...
