Bizarrely real buildings

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/07...3_screenshots/

There was no way the original screenshot was a *photograph* but one would have been forgiven for assuming it was merely a render. Now we know it was really in-game, I just want the game even more now!

meh, the environment looks more real than the cars...
I have to wonder if other 360 games as well as ps3/rev games will be up to this level.

The problem with having such beautiful scenery in a game like PGR means that you either miss it as you zip past at 120mph, or you slow down to look at the scenery, but end up losing the race! Oh, the humanity!

Well, I think this has answered the question: Xbox360 or wait for PS3

The Xbox360 looks better with every bit of news, and this is coming from a PS guy

Hah...we haven't even seen what will happen with Gran Turismo 5. Let's not all run amok just yet ('amok, amok, amok!!!').

That *is* beautiful, though. I'll be looking forward to this. I do agree that the buildings look more real than the cars, perhaps, but buildings are also static and rectangular, without real curves, and that helps a lot.

What I'm worried about is that, by looking at the polygons from their wireframe, that pretty building is just a big, painted on texture aside from the fire escape...not real windows, etc. It has beautiful bump/environment mapping to make it look pretty, but... It will be real when they get sun glinting off of windows, and the car is reflected, etc., etc. those can't be seen by a screenshot like this.

PGR2 cars were 20,000 polys in total. PGR3 cars use 40,000 polys just for the interiors...

Ok now thats what I call graphics I can't wait for the 360 now, stuff the PS3 though just thinking about the price of these games £40+ most probably; while games like Hl2 are like £30 on PC. [offtopic] Why are some console games so much more than the PC? [/off topic]

Because the console makers (Sony,MS,Nintendo etc.) take a cut of the sale price to reclaim the loss they make off the actualy console hardware.

Yes, exactly right: the PC platform is an "open" standard, so publishers can price lower for PC games because they only have to cover development costs plus the obvious marketing / distribution costs etc

However, for consoles, you have to have a license to publish a game for that system. Indeed, that "permission" can be withheld: Microsoft made it a requirement that all games had *some* sort of Xbox Live! component or they couldn't be released afaik.

Publishers then have to pay a royalty to the platform holders (Sony / Microsoft / Nintendo) per copy sold - £5 maybe. This covers the loss made on the hardware, but also general marketing eg Sony pimping PS2 to people, so they'll own the console they need to buy your game. Oh, and it also generates the profit required to invest in R&D for the next generation ie the hundreds of millions spent making PS3 / Xbox 360 l33t.

Oh, and finally, there's simple price elasticity: console gamers have paid more for decades. There are established price points which clearly work, as determined by the market place, and if that is £39.99, so be it. Irrespective of what you may personally believe, it's possible they wouldn't sell enough *extra* copies at £29.99 to cover the £10 "loss" compare with the volume they'd sell at £39.99

You would *think* more people would buy if games were £30, but that's price elasticity for you. Google if you want to learn more about it.

looks good, no as amazing as most people are saying in my eyes. Im not rearly a poly person rearly... games look different when running. What I look for in a racing game is when the graphics click and it seams asif the car is slipping through the air (NFS underground manges this somthimes if your turn off light halos and motion blur and max everything else out). This smooth almost fluidic racing style also has to go to the controls so that the entire race feals like a well coreraphed single movemnt every part perfect... games like the grand prix series just run me off. Much of the graphics of the Xbox 360 ect. will be wasted on the tv sets people run them off aswell. Idealy these consoles need a DVI or dsub conection for a Pc monitor as they have the power to output games at that res.

hopefully I will be able to produce some simlar artwork as I get a free copy of pro desktop while Im in education from my school which after a little play around apears to be able to be able to produce VERY detailed mechanisms ect. I think my summer project might be to make a car engine in it. I think I can also export the models to another program to texture. Im new to the whole 3d modeling stuff but Im quite good at it already, im better than my teacher and I have only had 2 lessons lasting an hour and have made a compleate model of a cog...

Technically, unless you're viewing the screenshot *on* a TV, you wouldn't get the full effect anyway. Even at 480i, you'll still benefit from the high-poly models, shpanky lighting etc etc

I'm sure we'll hear more about SD vs HD closer to the console's release
